While it's unclear to me why no one with the Windows 7 M1 build is sophisticated enough to make a normal video, this handcam version on YouTube will have to do for now...
It will be interesting to start to see some Windows 7 videos in circulation, but more interesting once Windows 7 becomes something other than new features on top of Vista. This is just an early build, so nothing really to see. Most changes that would even warrant release to 3rd parties are probably all under the hood. Probably by the next one or two MS's we will start to see Widows seven take shape as far as the general consumer is concerned.

Is it me thinking wrong or is WIn7 gonna be a minor update to Vista (as shown by the version number 6.1) just numbered 7 to charge for a service pack and rake in money ?? Hmmm maybe they adopted the strategy of a certain competitor ... !! ;-)
I don't believe that the Update will be major, at least in the way Vista is. Service packs are still under development, so I don't think we are looking at just a Vista service pack in Win7.
I think that people (especially the critics) underestimate the amount of under-the-hood type of overhaul that took place from XP to Vista. Microsoft essentially laid the groundwork for a new era of Windows with Vista. Now, with all that work, many minor details were overlooked and or miscalculated before the release. What is exciting about Windows 7 is that MS has the chance to take the great ground work laid out from Vista. I think what we can expect win7 to be is what Vista would have been had Microsoft had 7 years to work on it. 5 was too long, and 7 would have been unthinkable. Say what you want, but even thought it took Vista FOREVER to get to market, it was a huge improvement over the ever crappier seeming XP. Any normal consumer who uses Vista loves it, it is the techie blogger and mac fanboys who have generated 90% of the bad hype. Windows 7 now gets the opportunity to build on what Vista started, and thats a pretty good start in my opinion.

I think you're totally right. They did the heavy work in Vista laying out the new foundation but not having the time to polish it. After all Vista is what it means, a Vista on the next-gen Windows to come... !

Yes, Really. The fact that I said most consumers who use Vista are very pleased with it doesn't mean that Leopard isn't a good operating system. Give it a rest. Not every pro-windows comment has to be taken as an anti-Apple remark. In fact, I would agree that Leopard is more polished than Vista, however, Windows is a better foundation to work with in the first place in my opinion (yes I know you don't share that sentiment so spare me from you inevitable rebuttal on that note).
Another thing to consider with the general "surveys" is that they aren't usually very reliable. A sample of under 5000 PC owners?(excuse me mac and pc, since the Macintosh is no longer a personal computer I guess.) You're kidding right? PC manufacturers alone moved almost 300 million units worldwide in 2007, and a large number of those were in this country. And you want to base an argument on what 4600 volunteered consumers (again probably the more techy group than what would represent the real populous) had to say? Nice...
Needless to say, vista is a fine operating system, and it really is the OS for everyone. Your average Joe consumer, when looking to buy a PC, will stroll into wal-mart or best buy or the like with two things in mine, price and familiarity. With a PC running windows, our average Joe will most likely find both. And before you get your panties in a bunch, realize again that this doesn't mean that Joe would have been just as happy with a Mac, he just wasn't in the market for a PC that is more expensive on average, and that doesn't look the same as the PC he uses as work. Mac are fine, but in most cases windows is far more suitable, and Vista is the best OS of Windows yet....End of story.

Your observations? - that's worthless anecdotal "evidence" compared to this survey.
The DRM in W7 is so tight there is no other way to capture video except to use an external method, like a handy-cam.
How about the fact that as we all know over 100 million Vista licenses have been sold. While there was some talk that some people at first (mostly business users) were converting back to XP (of course no one mentions that Leopard saw many deserters of its own), this has since been accepted as a natural process of sorts for any OS that changes so much under the hood. Fast forward to today. A year in and nearing the release of SP1 we see little if any desertion back to XP circulating the airwaves, nearly if not all new PC's now ship standard with Vista, and with the Windows Live Services enhancing the platform in news ways all the time, the days of people wondering if Vista's future is bright are over.

But that was a fraction of PC sales, so more people actually chose XP instead. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of love for Vista. Plus, some percentage of users -- corporate in particular - wiped the Vista install.
There is a on line petition to save XP. Vista seemed fine in my recent setup experience [as an average user on a 2.4 GHz quad core Dell XPS 410], but seemed similar to XP. But as pointed out, I don't know 'what's under the hood'. It certainly did not seem bad at all, and wireless setup as well as network print sharing was a snap. On the other hand, Leopard has been flawless for me on my two computers since installed [new Pro Tower and a 7yr old G4]. I wish that I had more time to play with the XPS, and I bet that I would be happy with either system... as an average user.
ChangeWave Research members are generally tech savvy users, which are probably harder to please, hence the bad scores for Vista. Of course, Leopard please a much higher percentage. Also, over 4,000 is pretty statistically significant. However, it seems significant for you tech savvy uber-geeks, and may not relate at all to the average user base. That would need a different survey, IMO. [Notice no 'H' in IMO!]

As far as Vista selling on less than half of new PC's sold in 2007, well that stat has bugged me. I doubt that the average consumer is walking in to best buy and saying, "No sir...not Vista, I want XP please." The conclusion I have come to is the fact that it was far to easy to get XP on a new PC for most of 2007. Heck, even now in 2008, MS is still allowing new PC's to be sold with the last gen OS. The lack of consumer knowledge about Vista and its many many benefits over XP is bad marketing (vista marketing was virtually non-existent in 2006/07). That coupled with the fact that it was very easy to buy a PC online with XP as the base configuration, made for the fact that XP PC's still outsold Vista PC's in 2007.
On top of that you have the small percentage of people who did dislike Vista and backtracked to XP (which is expected to happen with any OS release) and those slightly above average consumers who may have tried to do their homework and were ill informed by the lies found in "Mac vs. PC. commercials, or all of the overly negative reviews of the on line blog community.

The only people I've met who complain about Vista are the people who are actually USING it. I haven't talked to anyone that really likes it, aside from the pretty eye candy. XP, on the other hand, is at least stable, if somewhat less "interesting", as Paul would say.

well congradulations, now you have talked to someone currently using Vista who feels it is FAR superior to XP in almost every way. All of the complaints about it (mainly early driver support) were never once a problem for me, and trust me I throw some weird stuff at my PC from time to time. Even those issues have been all but completely rectified now. Trust me, it isn't as hard as you depict it to be to find someone who likes Windows Vista alot. In fact I am more hard pressed to find people who legitimately dislike it (I truthfully haven't encountered anyone so far in my personal experience, and I am in a unique position to hear these sorts of things.)
2008 will be a good year for Vista, now that the dust has settled. Most of the people who gave Vista such an underservigly hard time (not that Vista didn't/doesn't have its problems) have really moved on. All that negative hype you ran into like a brick wall everytime you even tried to find the word Vista online is starting to go away. Now people can become legitimately informed by either indifferent reviews, or personal experience, and most people will be able to go into using VIsta w/o the "Mac vs. PC" mac guy sitting on their left shoulder, filling their heads with bad expectations. For these people, the first sign of a problem, and they write the OS off as a horrible peice of software, which just isn't true.
