Windows Search 4.0 Preview on Vista, XP

What a difference an operating system makes. If you install the new Windows Search 4.0 Preview on Windows Vista, the changes are visually non-existent:

Windows Vista with SP1, before WS 4.0 Preview:

Windows Vista with SP1, after WS 4.0 Preview:

OK, that's a joke, sort of: I'm using the same image in both cases, because Microsoft isn't visually changing anything. The changes are all under the hood.

On Windows XP, however, it's a different story. Before installing WS 4.0 Preview, you get the silly "XP dog" search application. But afterwards, you get something that's very reminiscent of the old MSN Desktop Search tool:

Windows XP, before WS 4.0 Preview:

Windows XP, after WS 4.0 Preview:

Interesting.

Well, I am running Vista Enterprise with all the Windows updates and now SP1.  I still get this issue about once per hour atleast: the search index service will peg my hd for 60-90 seconds making my pc 100% locked up. I updated the WDS just a few minutes ago, re-booted, so it will be curious to see what happens. I've read that other users of Vista do have this problem here and there too.

Anyone else have this issue or heard of it?

Thanks,

Bob

I'm wondering, why would we even need this in Vista? Do we really need to get a third party product to replace the overall good system already present?

Is this the search update that would allow me to use the search box built into the explorer window to search the current view when browsing a network drive?  It's truly annoying that this doesn't work in Vista yet.
