Zune VideoX: Microsoft’s iTunes killer?

This comes at an interesting time for me, as I've been updating the Windows Vista Secrets book for Service Pack 1 and am adding a bunch of material on related technologies, including a chapter on Zune. Like many, I'd sort of written Zune off, mostly because they seem to go into deep hibernation mode every year after releasing a new product version and never seem to ship any decent updates. But the Zune is a solid product now and is certainly attractive, especially the PC software. And it occurred to me, again, in writing about the Zune, that what it really lacks is a video content solution (TV shows, movies).

Anyway, today, Mary Jo Foley offers up some hopeful news about what might be happening there. For the record, Joe B. is a great guy and had a lot to do with the success of Media Center as a product. So I hope this is true.

Zune Marketplace is no iTunes killer. But maybe Zune VideoX will (at least attempt to) be.

I’m getting word of yet another Microsoft entertainment marketplace, known currently as “Zune Video X” (for Video Experience).

One of the main movers and shakers behind the initiative is said to be Joe Belfiore. Corporate vice president of the Entertainment and Devices eHome Division. Belfiore was responsible for “development, business management and marketing of Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition and related devices, including Media Center Extender and the Media Center DVR,” last anyone heard of him. As Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter Todd Bishop noted today, Belfiore is rumored to be working on something Zune-related now.)

Zune VideoX is not Zune Marketplace revisited, sources say. Instead, it is Microsoft’s attempt to apply the lessons learned with the success of the Xbox Live Marketplace to the Zune market, said one source who asked not to be named. It would be a single hub where Zune users could buy and download music, videos, TV shows and more entertainment content.

The only thing I can add to this is that I do know the Media Center guys essentially took a year off to work on, yes, the UI for Zune 2.0. This explains a few things, I think, including why the "Fiji" update to Media Center was delayed.

As a 360 and Zune owner I've been mystified why I can't view my 360 purchased/rented content on my Zune/Zune Software. The backend is the same. The DRM is the same system. The logins are the same. Why bifurcate?

Right now it at least makes some sense in that I can get video from XBLM and music from Zune Marketplace but if I can play the Zune content on the 360 I should be able to play the 360 content on the Zune.

I suppose the obvious answer is licensing but I would be really curious to know if it's something else.

Yep, that's the whole point in offering an integrated solution...

maybe they gonna change that with their new Zune/Live or whatever marketplace.

I hear a lot of smack directed toward the Zune, but I'm sure it's from those who have never picked one up. That's a shame because I do believe that folks are missing out on a great product because of negative hype and spin like another great product (read: Vista). I don't know if I would get much use out of VideoX, but I we'll see. Maybe at least that will mean the Zune software will have the full screen video playback that it lacks now.

I'm skeptical of anything that's labeled as an "itunes killer" or that has the letter X in the title.  :) That said, I do think the Zune isn't given enough kudos. It's a solid product at a better price point.

What's really missing for me is that that the software 1) isn't quite as good as iTunes and 2) there's no 100% easy transition from iTunes that keeps all your iTunes ratings, play counts, etc. Most of us who use iTunes have it tricked out with every last detail of every file defined and we don't want to lose that.

I have a Zune, a brown one that I won at some MS event right after it came out December 2006?

Anyhow like most have said its a great device.  The screen is nice, and the casing is super solid, no scratching and what not.  I have dropped once running on a treadmill.  It hit the running track and shot across the floor in the gym.  I picked up, plugged my head phones in and it was still playing the music.

No its got three major problems.  The software, even after the update is still lacking in many ways, but at least is actually works now and does not rail a CPU to 100%.  Version 1 was probably the worst software on the planet.  2.  Store content is just lacking badly compared to iTunes.  3.  MS Points is the lamest thing there is concerning the Zune and Xbox.  I dont want to buy point, so I can buy songs or game downloads.  Stupid, just plain stupid.  I dont want to figure out MS point to us currency calculations, please just take my money!!!  4.  The Zune lacks when it come to third party support.  The iPod has way more than yo need.  Just go to best buy and go over to the Zune section....or end cap I mean:)

Windows media player has been trying for a long time.  They were early to the market, but the mass market did not get it.  I still dont think that media player and WHS are main stream.

Apple TV has a better chance because of the appliance aspect.  That and iTunes.  iTunes is turning into the digital center of the world.  When the world says "iPod" to describe any portable media player you know you have success.

It is hard to get enthused about this knowing that MS just really has a horrible track record with continually innovating software packages like this. Couple that with their inept nature in relationships with media companies and you have a recipe for disaster.

1) The zune software and syncing interface should be handled through WMP as an add-in or plug-in. I don't want any more media application on my system.

2) It needs to be interoperable with the xbox video marketplace and should in some way integrate with live and sky-drive

3) MS needs to then create 'hooks' in media center to access the video content through the 10' UI. Hell, they should be working with netflix to offer easy access to the wacth it now feature. They did it with XM.

4) How about a zune gadget for vista?

That sums up MS right about now.  Dam that is painful to watch!

Instead of focusing on killing something, how about working on interoptability with all MS related software and making it the best possible player out there. I've touted many of the comments on here when Zune was in development. MS made the mistakes and hopefully they'll learn from then. Until them, I'm still downloading on iTunes and still using my iPod.

Seriously? It took them a YEAR? How many "guys" were there, and why did it take them so long? Come on...A YEAR? That implies incompetence or laziness.

The competition is good, and Zune has definitely come a long way (even though it still has a long way to go). But Microsoft needs to be a lot more nimble if they're going to be successful and not just another also-ran.

Really looking forward to this upgrade/update.  Has baffled me why the Xbox Live Marketplace and Zune Marketplace have not already been merged.  Looking forward to it... I the meantime I bought a MacBook Air to interact with iTunes.
