Aye, there be glass here

I received a number of emails today about this exciting post on Neowin MozillaZine:

Vista Glass for Firefox
For all you people who have been looking for a way to get Vista's glass effect in Firefox, look no further. Here is an extension for Firefox 3 that will do it. Please read this entire article before install this extension.

THIS IS ALPHA QUALITY

This extension is alpha quality, I whipped it together quickly.

In the javascript file I used a portion of the code from the MinimizeToTray extension. It's license stands for that portion that I am aware of.

Known Issues
It will work on the Vista Basic theme, but will not produce the blue toolbars as Windows Explorer does, this will still a work in progress.

Install
Download: Glasser Installer (XPI)

To install Glasser, first download the file, then drag and drop it to your Firefox window.

If you want the Windows Explorer style background on the personal toolbar, use this css file. You can install it with either the Stylish Add-on, or by edit your userChrome.css file.

If you want to remove the menu-bar, try either Personal Menu or Hide Menubar. Both support using the Alt key to temperately show the menu-bar and Personal Menu lets you keep a button on the toolbar to gain access to the menus.

So does it work? You bet it does, baby...

Note that I usually turn off the Bookmarks toolbar, but wanted to see what it looked like. The teal green color used there is, of course, all wrong: This is the color Vista uses for shell windows. Arguably, it should be a medium blue like the toolbars in Windows Calendar or Windows Mail productivity applications. That said, black, used in digital media apps like Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker, would probably be even nicer looking.

Thanks to everyone that wrote in about this.

Actually, it's supposed to use the silver-with-a-touch-of-purple, available as browsertabbar-toolbox in -moz-appearance. At least that's what IE8 does.

Wait a minute here. The Bookmarks toolbar (*which you don't use anyway*) aside, the Navigation toolbar (which is what you have been whining about) LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME. What is this make-or-break case, exactly, that you've built up to before now? What should I be seeing? The icons on the toolbar look exactly the same.

Thanks Paul!

This was what I was really hoping for through all those Beta's. The bookmark toolbar needs to be tweaked but otherwise it looks and runs great.

Looks like they answered the bookmark toolabar requests.

They have a black and aqua theme out.
