There are big issues with slipstreaming on an OS other than the specific version you are slipstreaming apparently.  So if you are slipstreaming XP Pro VL you need to do it on XP Pro VL and so on.  

I personally think it would be better to use the Microsoft tool oscdimg.exe to create a disk image and then write it with a program such as ImgBurn or Nero.  I'm not sure if you are allowed to distribute oscdimg.exe though.  Its available in the WAIK, which is free so it should be fine?

Other than that it isn't really important to extract the service pack files, you can just run the /integrate switch on the main installer exe.  Also maybe you could add a section showing which files can be deleted e.g WIN51IP.SP2 and so on.  

Yes, and that's what causes those serial number issues he mentioned later in the article. Even though it only pertains to VL slipstreams, it needs to be made clear that in this case Vista will not do at all.

Paul.  I am one of those who does not have SP2 CDs of the copies of XP that I would want to integrate...I have a XP Pro Upgrade that was bought right after launch, and I have an XP Pro Full Retail SP1 CD. Why wouldn't it be possible for us to integrate SP2 with these discs, and then integrate SP3 into that? This is a huge oversight, because I suspect that there are far more pre-SP2 XP CDs floating around than MS may think.

Another thing...maybe it's related to this whole issue of using only SP2 CDs, but a problem I run into with these old CDs izs that the IDE driver on the boot CD image is pre-Big Drive extensions. In other words, it cannot see beyond 130GB of my 250GB hard drive. And I doubt slipstreaming would fix this, either, but would there be any way to fix this?

cdburn.exe is also included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit too (also free).  It's a good match for oscdimg.exe.

Get a new BIOS.  I can guarantee you that XP works just fine on disks bigger than 130GB (I've installed Windows XP several times on disks sized up to 1TB).  It's your motherboard BIOS not supporting 48-bit LBA (ATA-6).  How old is the computer anyway?

There is also a good free tool, named NLite (http://www.nliteos.com/), perfect for slipstreaming and OS customization.

I was able to slipstream a RTM version of XP Pro Volume License.  That is no SP 1 or 2 already on the disc, with SP3.  I used nLite and it allowed me to integrate IE7 and WMP 11 on to the install CD as well!

Download the WMP11 installer from Microsoft, install the WMP11 Slipstreamer then simply run nLite and insert the WMP11 installer into the Hotfixes page.

Download the IE7 installer from Microsoft and insert it into the nLite Hotfixes page, simple as that."

It works like a charm.  One problem I did notice was that I could not skip typing in the volume license key.  I thought that was a new feature in SP3.
