Grand Theft Auto IV nets $500 million in one week

Take that, Halo 3:

"Grand Theft Auto IV" raked in more than $500 million in its first week in stores, selling more than 6 million units worldwide, the video game's publisher said Wednesday.

The highly anticipated title from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. has received stellar ratings along with criticism for its violent content.

The title sold about 3.6 million units on April 29, its opening day, bringing in roughly $310 million. This is $10 million more than what Microsoft Corp.'s "Halo 3," another blockbuster game, took in during its first week last fall.

More than 2.3 million people played [the game] on Microsoft's Xbox Live online service.

Just so that's clear: GTA4 sold more on opening day than Halo 3 did in its entire first week on the market. Unbelievable.

Thanks Dave. :)

Any idea when to expect numbers by console. XbxLive is a good indicator but MS hasn't released anything there.

Also someone mentioned on TWiT that MS payed Rockstar $50million for exclusive extra's. Is that true?

When I hear people complaining about not being able to keep a budget because of rising gas and grocery prices, and then I read that GTA sold $500 million the first week, I realize how screwed up our priorities are. :P

JuryDuty I could not agree more.  The fact that this game is so popular speaks volumes of the sad state of America.

Jury Duty and Lindy,

Why?  Your comments don't reflect current reality or history.  The 1930s are frequently considered the "Golden Age" of American Cinema.  The same Americans who could barely afford to feed their families went to the movies on average once a week.  The concept is called escapism.

Now you may argue that the content of the game and its alleged glorification of violence shows a profound sickness in our society, but I would disagree.

The same people who get their panties in a wad over GTA are the same ones who bitched about Dungeon and Dragons in the 80s, comic books in the fifties, and nickelodeon theaters in the twenties.  They are simply kill joys who cannot fathom the conception of fantasy versus reality.

I can't believe it, but I'm agreeing 100 percent with Joe Dokes here. Does anyone here just after 9-11? The patriotic music, the television that kept shoving it down your throats over and over again. Just look at the news today.... Obama, Clinton... yada yada yada, Oil prices even higher.... blah blah blah, Terrorism in Beruit....

Do you ya'lll get the picture. Even a news junkie, political junkie, technology junkie, (I know, sad isn't it?) like me needs an escape from all the depressing crap thats out there. Thats why I've been firing up my 360, borrowing my brother's Wii (He hasn't played it lately, Might as well enjoy it.), and scraping what little cash I have to go and see Ironman this weekend.

Are ya gonna deprive a fella something that will make him smile? So he can soldier on in these troubling times? We're not that far off from the folks in the 1930's. People can't keep up because of artifical inflation being done by plenty of X-factors.

Just turn off the news, grab a tub of pop corn, enjoy that flick or give that 360 a spin. Damn it, I'm only human.

We don't know if the Xbox 360 sales of GTA4 beat Halo 3 sales because the have not released the sales stats for the individual platforms yet.

I think the sales figures that Halo 3 made on one platform in its opening day is more impressive than the sales figures that GTA4 made on two platforms in its opening day.  But that's just me. ;-)

Ketwyld,

Uh no, it might be if the two numbers were close, but GTA sales have blown away Halo sales, and I say this as a fan of Halo, who would buy Halo 3 long before GTA.  Personally I'm still waiting to buy Halo 3 because I'm still waiting for the 360 to become cheap AND reliable.  What Halo and especially GTA are making clear is that Video games are and have been for quite some time a truly new mass market medium, that can and will compete with Movies and Music for entertainment dollars.

500 Million dollars in one week is simply phenomenal.  Think about it, this makes Spiderman 3, and virtually every other block buster movie look like an also ran.

Chart Tracker is reporting that 55% of GTA IV sales belong to the Xbox 360. The remaining 45% of sales belong to the Playstation 3. The big loser here is Nintendo whose violence restrictions have hurt its sales AGAIN. Does anyone remember Mortal Kombat on the SNES with no blood? No wonder Genesis sales were so good. $500,000,000.00 is something both Sony and Microsoft are laughing it up all the way to the bank.

This is why Nintendo and its Wii console will fail. Nintendo cannot afford to blow off the adult side of the video game industry. With MS and Sony working on motion controls and better family friendly games, the competition will adapt to the Wii. No matter how good Mario Kart Wii does, it just got blown away by Niko and GTA IV. I've heard that Wii game sales drop off 90 percent after the first week. I'm sure GTA will stay strong in sales well after the first week.

Nobody is disputing the fun factor of the Wii. Its just that when a console caters to one section of the industry, the rest will give the customer what it wants. I'm sorry, but I can only play so much Wii sports, DBZ 3, and Super Mario Brothers before I want something more relavent. I think Nintendo needs to grow up and join the rest of the industry.
