XP product key not accepted after integrating SP3 media

Microsoft finally addresses an issue some Windows XP users have had in slipstreaming Service Pack 3 (SP3) into their installation media:

This blog entry covers a issue that some customers have encountered with the release of SP3 for Windows XP. The service pack supports the use of the /integrate command to integrate(or also called slipstream) SP3 into a Windows XP flat. It is supported to run the command with the following media

Windows XP Professional RTM

Windows XP Professional SP1

Windows XP Professional SP2

The problem arises if the /integrate command is run under Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. The /integrate process will not report any error and appear to work but if you try to install from the media your product key may not be accepted. Luckily the fix is easy. Run the /integrate command under Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. For more information around this issue see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;950722

Paul, I'm curious, then, why you have a workaround for this listed in your procedure that's incorrect. Running the command with elevated privileges does not, in fact, solve the problem. I asked for clarification on this in an email, but there was no response.

Further, in last week's podcast, you made no mention of the workaround in the procedure, but instead said that the command should be run with compatibility mode set to XP, something which I haven't tried yet, but which seemingly would have been known before now (and mentioned by MS) if it actually worked. Still, if it works, great.

You should probably correct the article either way, as it's been sitting out there for weeks now.

BTW, MS confirmed the issue many months ago in the Technet forum, so "finally addresses" isn't accurate.

Also, to clarify, the /integrate feature also works in Windows XP/Server 2003 version of Windows PE works fine too.  That's how I integrated it, just before using WinPE to do an install over a network share by launching WINNT32.EXE manually.

Google "Autostreamer" its a free slick little GUI tool that will do it for you very easily.  I have taken a XP SP2 and the SP3 file and merged them fine with this tool.

I of course did not run the tool from Vista.

The error in the "updated" version of the procedure (on the 24th) is still there.
