Windows Search 4.0 Released to Web

Microsoft announced today the final release of Windows Search 4.0:

Today we released the final version of Windows Search 4.0 to Microsoft Download Center. Windows Search 4.0 updates search in Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Home Server. This release comes after a public Windows Search 4.0 Preview, which was a success thanks to great community participation - with around 300,000 downloads.   Since the Preview was released, a number of quality improvements have been made to the product based on feedback provided by the community.

What’s new:

  • Performance improvements
  • Reliability improvements
  • PC-to-PC searches (remote index discovery) now work XP-to-Vista, Vista-to-XP, and Vista-to-2008
  • Manageability improvements for IT pros
  • Added support for indexing files encrypted with EFS

Windows Search 4.0 will be made available on Windows Update in the future as well.

Thanks Paul, don't think I'd have known about that if you hadn't led me to it. I love the search feature on Vista. I installed the XP version on my dads computer but it doesn't search email subject lines like the Windows version.

Ms releases a lot of these kinds of things and really needs a better way of letting users know. Installed the preview on a friend's XP box, awesome. Will update my Vista system.

Now if they can just expand tagging to support all filetypes, I'd be extremely happy.
