Microsoft updating Windows Update

Via email:

In order to provide customers with improvements in reliability, operation and service quality, Microsoft needs to occasionally update the infrastructure of the Windows Update client itself (this usually occurs about once a year). To help customers prepare, and ensure that they understand what’s happening, we have created several resources to provide information on the updates before they begin in late July.

This particular update will not make any changes to the way WU looks of feels, but will improve:

  • The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates
  • The speed in which signature updates will be delivered

Windows Vista customers who select “never check for updates” (and Windows XP customers who select “turn off Automatic Update”) in their WU settings will not receive this WU infrastructure update unless they elect to install it manually by visiting Windows Update.

For more information about this particular infrastructure update, or for additional information on Windows Update, please visit:

Interesting that XP users were parenthesized.  Do those walls seem closer together today?

Maybe this will fix Windows Update on my machine; every time I visit the site it throws up an error message. I think it's because I had Internet Explorer 8 Tech Preview 1 and later uninstalled it.

Its about damn time this came along. This is one gripe with Vista that truely annoys me. There is no excuse with DDR memory, dual core processors, and other improvements for WU to be so dreadfully slow. I hope these fixes make it zing on through, because since XP SP2, its been getting slower and slower. Come on Microsoft, fix the warp drive... Or do we have to re-call Scotty from heaven? hehehehe! They should change the text to this maybe?

This particular update will not make any changes to the way WU looks of feels, but we have charged up the damn dilithium crystals which have been going strong since Windows 98 SE, but fading since XP SP2. This will improve:

   * The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates

   * The speed in which signature updates will be delivered

@ RunTimeError....

At this point, I'd even settle for Geordi LaForge, Miles O'Brien, Torres or Tripp from Enterprise to get WU working right. It truely annoys me the lengthy scanning time. The rest of Vista works pretty good, but WU really ticks me off. I will concede that point to Mac users.

Peace.
