WindowsLive.com Web site relaunched

Microsoft has shipped a redesigned version of its WindowsLive.com Web site, which has operated as an information and download portal for the company’s Windows Live “suite” and other products and services. Well, that’s not really changing. What is changing is that Microsoft has infused WindowsLive.com with community features (via subtle Windows Live Space integration). This blog post from Marty Collins, a Windows Live Senior Product Marketing Manager, is explains what’s happening:

With today’s re-launch of our revamped WindowsLive.com we’re sharing control of the site’s content with the people who know our services best - our customers.

Our community members are creating much of the site’s content, usually by showing how they are using various Windows Live services in everyday situations (read here how Windows Live Messenger saved someone’s life ... sort of). We’re also making it easier for members to share their experience. Once they join the community, all they have to do is post on their Windows Live Space where they’re already spending their time, and tag it for the community. Their multimedia stories, tips, advice and comments are automatically aggregated by an RSS feed into the community, where it’s shared with, and rated by, members. Content with the highest ratings is then showcased on WindowsLive.com.

We began developing this community-driven site about a year ago with some pretty basic questions: How can we help our customers help each other? How are they using Windows Live in creative ways that make their lives better and more fun? In the process, what can we learn about making Windows Live better?

I'd have chosen a different way of putting it.

Good step in the right direction, it helps bring it together.

Now if they could start killing off other names (MSN, Hotmail) and their web sites, and roll them into a single "Live" offering it would help greatly with their product confusion.

Seems that the larger rebranding of WindowsLive.com and Windows.com just are a lot softer than before and help promote the products better, maybe part of the larger advertising campaign coming ..... eventually about Vista.

Snake, a true unification of the brand under "Live" would be rather nice, though the problem there stands that many know MSN and thje massive change in branding might cause confusion for those who are used to their defacto homepage in IE, but the shift would be rather nice to build more friendliness towards the Windows brand in general.

I think I like the old Windows Live videos better.  They used to have them on WindowsLive.com but that was before the previous revision to the site with all the big buttons on one page.  It was just after they released "Wave 2".  They were narrated by someone that sounded a lot like Catherine Keener, the actress from The 40-Year Old Virgin (correct me if I'm wrong).

Overall though, it does fit in line with the current Windows page theme, which is a nice way of unifying the encompassing Windows concepts.

I like the new site design....but I have be cynical a bit.  I'd *rather* see some updates to the Live product suite.  Instead, we've gotten two site redisigns in the past 4 months or so and no real updates to the product line.  I really wish MS would stop hawking their wares and get back to pumping out some good stuff.  It's almost like the Live guys and the Zune guys are in the same office or something......oh well.

OT: but since Paul hasn't mentioned it, there's no place where it's On Topic...

The new header on SuperSite is:

Coming Soon!

The SuperSite Switcher Guide

From Mac to Windows.

You know you want to.

The comments when he publishes that should be interesting (and maybe pay for Paul's trip to Ireland)
