Coming soon! Even better, even faster Windows Live Hotmail

Microsoft is finally starting to tout the first of their upcoming "Wave 3" Windows Live products and services:

You depend on Windows Live Hotmail to keep up with the people you care about most. Well, we've listened to your feedback and have some new features coming that'll make it even easier and more fun to stay in touch.

Faster than ever. It'll be up to 70 percent faster to sign in and see your e-mail.1 Of course, along with more speed, you'll get powerful technology that deflects spam and helps protect you against viruses and scams.

Simpler, cleaner design. We're combining the classic and full versions of Hotmail, so you get access to everything Hotmail has to offer. The reading pane will let you check out your e-mail without having to open it up.

Put more you in your e-mail. New themes and colors will let you design the look of your inbox, so your personality can really shine through.

Closer to your contacts. Just start typing in the "To" line and you'll get a choice of e-mail contacts that most closely match what you've typed. Plus, it'll be even easier to e-mail groups of people.

Cool stuff coming soon. We've got even more great updates to Hotmail for you to look forward to, like ever-increasing storage2, the ability to IM right from Hotmail, and new calendar features that make it easier to share your calendar with family and friends.

Hotmail is improving, but will be the same in ways you love

Sure, the updated Hotmail will be faster and better. But, we've listened to your feedback, so you'll get the best of both worlds. That's because we're keeping the features you've come to know, love, and use every day. Here are a few of the things that won't change:

  • Your login
  • Your e-mail address
  • Your contact and distribution lists
  • Ability to get your e-mail anywhere you're on the Internet

As always, LiveSide.net is on the scene with more information.

Thanks Alex Q.

Hi Paul,

Great news on the hotmail updates, but I wonder - will they get rid of the shameful and appalling flashing banner adds at the top that take up 10% of my screen? (e.g. CONGRATULATIONS YOU'VE GOT ONE FREE YEAR!!!)

Good to hear! Interesting new UI -- kinda looks like a cross between Kahuna and Zune 2.

Hopefully this release will work with partner accounts too. Sympatico still has me using the old MSN Hotmail interface, no joke.

Only one question.  Does it support free IMAP mail and on any IMAP mail client?

If not then, yeah it looks really nice but so what.  I bet more people still use email in a fat client today than web based email.

Awesome. Windows Live Hotmail has been slowly progressing as free email service and its one of my oldest email accounts.

However, Lindy does actually make a very good point. W.L.Hotmail should support free IMAP mail and clients.

As I've always said, I'm always supportive of user options and rights. Opening up W.L. Hotmail would be a good thing.

There's a way to change that.  It involves signing up for WL Hotmail but using your Sympatico email address as the login....I don't remember all the steps though, because I'm not on Rogers, which is much faster IMHO.  You can however get a live.ca email account though.

Outlook Connector in Office Outlook and Windows Live Mail provide the same functionality.  Windows Mobile phones also support it natively in Outlook Mobile too, so I don't see how IMAP is relevant.

....should read "I'm *now* on Rogers"

@Wae: Thanks! I got a live.ca address as soon as they were available, but I'll need to experiment with that trick; I didn't know it was possible. For the record, Bell was supposed to have everyone switched over by the end of 2007, which seemed late back then too. I've been checking Bell's forums and the reps give the same non-answers every month. I doubt whether Bell is devoting any attention to this at all; they've probably got more man-hours invested in changing their logo.
