man gotta love dell for always having non standard internals........ ever seen a BYO motherboard with that layout? nope.

It's called BTX form factor, and Dell is one of the only companies still using it.  It was released in order to quell the ever increasing heat produced by Intel processors back in the late Pentium 4 to Pentium D days.  The fan/heatsink combo with direct air coming from the front of the case introduced exorbitant costs in manufacturing and most OEM's either didn't adopt it, or adopted it and quickly went back to ATX.  Dell's current consumer systems are now back on ATX.  Intel even stopped making BTX motherboards for the channel shortly after the 955 Extreme chipset was released due to lack of support.

Now with the Core 2 family of desktop processors, BTX is no longer necessary, since the new architecture is much more energy efficient (and produces less heat) than the old Pentium 4 Netburst architecture which was used up until the Pentium D.

Hell, you can even run quote a few xeons fanless!
