Live Mesh is in beta … with Mac and Windows Mobile support

I should have dropped a note about this a while ago and of course I’m behind in writing about it formally. (There’s just so much going on right now.) Anyway, Live Mesh has moved from Tech Preview to Beta and is now available on Macs and Windows Mobile devices. I’ve installed it on my Macbook but will try the Windows Mobile soon. Here’s a write-up about the Windows Mobile support from the Windows Mobile team blog:

As part of PDC , it was announced that Live Mesh will be going into an open Beta over the course of this week. We are pleased to announce that it is live! No pun intended :) For more information about Live Mesh and the Beta, check out the Live Mesh blog and the Live Mesh Web site.

There’s a nice rundown of the install process, plus a fun shot of the Windows Mobile Live Mesh experience:

I tried installing Live Mesh on my Blackjack 2 earlier this week and keep getting told that there's not any more slots available in the beta for me.

Good luck. :)

Once again, Microsoft has proven that it is better at doing Mac OS X than Apple is at doing Windows.

Live Mesh flawless so far on my MacBook (installed several days ago).  Haven't put it on primary machine yet.

Intel-only will be a decreasing problem over time, ricronin.  Meanwhile, you can log in via the web, upload and download files, etc.

I don't get how to even add Windows Mobile devices.  I sign on to Mesh.com with my mobile browser and I can download individual files.  But I don't see an install.

I check on the mesh website with my PC and I still see "Mobile support coming soon".

Currently Live Mesh for mobile devices is provided only on a limited basis in the US and UK according to the Live Mesh blog at blogs.msdn.com/.../default.aspx. Are you somewhere else?

What's the deal with the Live Mesh Beta restricting Mesh from syncing Microsoft Money files?

I tried Live Mesh earlier but at that time, it did not support OS X.  I have since switched to DropBox and now my bookmarks, passwords, etc... are the same on every computer and virtual computer I own from Linux to OSX to Windows.  What would make me switch to Mesh from DropBox?

What if I said Paul will offer you money to switch?

@will5 - For simply syncing files, there might not be a great argument for Live Mesh. However, as the development  of Live Mesh progresses, I see more compelling arguments. We'll see. If you can do what you want with other technologies, then great. It's really a matter of evaluating what is best for you.

I installed Live Mesh on my Mac Pro Tower with Leopard and it works great. It had all the stuff that my XP box has. I agree with John, it works great. Maybe someday it will work on an iPhone, or an I dreaming? Also, it's free and you don't need a hotmail account, but can use it if you wish.

You're dreaming.  Apple won't allow it because they'd rather you pay for MobileMe$$.

Too bad it wouldn't support a jail broken iPhone.

Took me a while to figure out as to why I couldn't get it to work on my PDA  ( I later found out that my region settings on Windows Live was set to Puerto Rico ), but now it's working great!

It's not the most flashy program for WinMobile, but it has already replaced ActiveSync for me, and I love not having to go into a browser to use Mesh.

OT: Every time I try to comment on a post, my comment isn't posted and it appears the thread is locked. This has happened to me about 4 times now. It's really annoying.

Okay I only made the above post to test and see if one of my posts actually made it up - I was going to post in the windows 7 running on an eee pc that I have Vista running on an Athlon XP 2500+ with 2 GB ram and it runs very smoothly, no issues at all (save for my logitech webcam that logitech won't write vista drivers for). So I'm not sure how people are unable to get satisfactory results using dual-core processors, newer chipsets etc.

It works great on my Mac.  Cant get to it from work so that pretty much kills 90% of its use for me.

Drop box has more features, works with more OS'es, does not require an account to share but has a limit of 1gig.

@johnbaxter  "Once again, Microsoft has proven that it is better at doing Mac OS X than Apple is at doing Windows." ????  Umm Apple does not offer anything like mesh.  The closeset thing they have is iDisk, which is old technology, webdav/webshare stuff.  Which IMO does not work great on any platform.  Mesh is NOT webdav/webshare, nor is dropbox.

I read this week that ATT is testing monthly caps in the Reno area, 150gig for the top tier customers.  All of the broadband companies are loving mesh, Xbox Live, PSN, Dropbox, MobileMe, Netflix online, Apple TV, Hulu, etc.

Throw it all into the cloud, get charged for it, hope the source stays up and pray its secure.  Good times.

@lindy My remark about Apple on Windows vs Microsoft on Mac OS X wasn't restricted to Mesh...the good work with Mesh by MS is just another example.
