Firefox 3.1 Beta 2

News from Mozilla:

Mozilla has just announced the availability of Firefox 3.1 beta 2.  This latest version features support for new Web technologies, including video, audio, geolocation and offline applications.

Mozilla encourages developers and members of their testing community to use Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 for early evaluation and feedback.  Please note that while this release is considered to be stable, it's not a fully completed product so there may be some rough edges visually and with the user experience.

New features and changes include:

  • This beta is now available in more than 55 languages.
  • Added a new private browsing mode and new functions to make it easy to clear recent history by time as well as remove all traces of a Web site.
  • New support for Web worker threads.
  • The new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine is on by default for Web content.
  • Web standards improvements in the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing.
  • Support for new Web technologies such as the video and audio elements, the W3C geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, CSS 2.1 and 3 properties, SVG transforms and offline applications.

I think the new switch mode that previews is supposed to be integrated with 3.1, but since I've been using the preview mode (since you told me about the extension for it) it isn't that big of a new feature.

The new tab switching actually isn't in beta 2, it was backed out a while back until more work can be done on it. I'm not sure if it will make the final of 3.1 or not.

Off topic, but just wanted to pass this on.

Paul, you intimated on the podcast that most people wouldn't use Twitter via the web client? Not so. It still reins supreme when it comes to sending one's tweets.
