Office Live Web Applications beta delayed until 2009

At PDC 2008 in October, Microsoft unveiled its Office Live Web Applications and promised that Office Live Workspace users would get free access to the beta by the end of 2008. Apparently, that’s not happening now, though this is awfully vague:

Those wanting to get their hands on the web-based versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint will have to wait a little longer.

Business division president Stephen Elop said in an interview in October that a technology preview of the browser-based applications would come this year, followed by a beta in 2009. However, it's currently being used by fewer than 1,000 Microsoft employees, as part of a test that started in November and is slated to continue throughout February.

The public will not be able to try a test version of the products until next year — and Microsoft is not saying exactly when.

Paul, it will be 2009 in a few days.

And PS, Google sux.

These will probably work great on my $400 Vista laptop [which shipped with MS Works anyway].

As usual. Another delayed product. Pretty typical of tech companies these days.

Ozzie is copying google (not a bad thing) to get his web cloud going:

>>He had workers rip down the labyrinthine, catacomb-like corridors on one floor of a building on the Red West campus and called in architects to create a more open design. Now, walking into the Windows Live Core group is like leaving Microsoft and visiting a Futurama set. Office windows open onto hallways so that quick eye contact can trigger spontaneous discussions. Whiteboards are everywhere. Pool tables, mini-lounges, and snack zones draw people toward the center of the space rather than isolating them around the edges.<<

>>Maybe the most subversive aspect of Microsoft's newest operating system is that it was produced with a fraction of the manpower the company usually directs to critical projects. "There are literally thousands of people on Windows, but small groups with very focused people is a better way of doing things," Cutler says. "So this project is much smaller. It's like 150."<<

Since bloggers and analysts have decided to take on the task of scheduling releases for companies, without benefit of actual knowledge, there appear to be far more delayed products than there actually are.

That said, missing a date provided by a Microsoft person at PDC would count as a real delay in my view.

It's not so much bloggers and analysts deciding that they can announce deadlines for companies that bothers me. The good ones, after all, label them as their best guesses. It's when they blame the company for missing a date that only they claimed existed that I worry about the state of the tech reporting industry.

Of course, in this case, I probably wouldn't have been on the limited "tech preview" recipients list anyway so it's not that big a deal for me personally.

G4's Adam Sessler's comments about video game developers hitting their target dates can certainly be applied to Microsoft. Thats why I think Paul's June 2009 date for Windows Seven is highly improbable. If they can't get Office Web Apps done and on schedule, a beast more complex such as Windows Seven will take more time.

That's actually a good example of my "Animal Farm" post on the other thread. Yes, roberts is only a school kid, but a lot of adults feel this way too.

Is this something Apple's fringe userbase actually obsessed over the past few days?

There are bigger f'ing issues this nation has to worry about other than what brand of mp3 player the president uses.

There most certainly are not! What MP3 player the President uses points towards the man's taste. Compare the two. Ballmer, Windows user. No taste. Obama, Mac user. Taste. You have no sense of priority.

Yes. They even tagged it as "ZuneGate" because they were so scadalized that the new President Elect wasn't showing proper loyalty to Cupertino.

It's been very amusing.

Probably not, but it was funny the way his spokesman issued a statement the next day, denying those rumors. It did seem like the President (or at least his spokesman) was embarrassed to be seen with a Zune.

But true, none the less. Not only does the timestamp of robertsjoe's posts point directly to him/her being a schoolkid, so does his/her immature rants about a subject that he/she obviously knows little to nothing about. Remember, I am not one of the "all MSFT, all the time" guys on this site, either. As a Mac user - as well as a user of many other OSes - robertsjoe embarasses me and is the epitome of what people the world over both despise and laugh at in Apple's high strung fans.

Honestly who cares Roberts, I don't care if it was lent to him or he owns it. Just like I don't care if he decides to smoke in the white house.

We have more pressing issues to worry about, like the economic slowdown/recession. A war in another country, political relations we need to improve with other countries.

This thing about what Obama uses doesn't really apply. Other than the US, Australia, the U.K. and probably Germany does Apple sell.

Off of the OT

I can wait a little longer, I rather a working program than a buggy program released to soon.

Yes, but if Obama did have his spokesman issue that statement (to WSJ?), I think we have a President-elect who is too concerned about his image. I mean, this is a small thing. Obama wouldn't have lost much (except for the respect of some iCabalists) if he had kept his mouth shut here.

"Bush had a Zune? Hmm, I hadn't heard that.  ;-)  Remember, we only have 1 president at a time...and it isn't Obama yet..."

Haha. I forgot. Oprah Winfrey hasn't done her historic show yet.

Ah, but past presidents retain their title.  So Bill Clinton is still known as "Mr. President" (gag), even if he's not the acting president.

Here's a quiz question:  How many US presidents are still living?

Nobody would.  You should arrange for your teacher to help get that grade 3 dictionary off the top bookshelf for you - you don't know the meaning of the word.

Yes, indeed. The fact that some of them feel less embarrassed defending the biggest Apple troll there is than being seen with Microsoft's products, tells me something about these people.

"Now, pull your head out of your *** and look around. Get yourself an atlas and look it. Big world, isn't it?"

Funny that, coming from you. Did you have to wash your mouth with soap water after you said that?

BTW, it sounds highly improbable that the President would borrow someone's player. You wouldn't want to put someones dirty earphones in your ears, would you? No one stopped to think how silly that hypothesis was.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

This is making what mikegalos has been saying about Apple telling you that if you use anything but their products you aren't cool is starting to sound realistic. But, I fo one don't use my Macs to be cool...I use them because I happen to like OS X...and Vista...and Ubuntu...and a few other OSes.
