Does this update come down over Windows Update too?

FYI, if you run Windows Update within WIndows 7 it will also install the patch for you. That's usually the first thing I do after installing a new OS anyways.

I would expect that people only test copies of their music on a beta, rather than the only copy that they own, so I don't think anyone permanently ruined a collection.

Picked up the MP3 (etc) update late morning (PST) today from Windows Update.  It was new today (as seen here).

I did not get the security update that earlier versions of Windows (should have) received today.  Either it doesn't apply to 7 beta, or we don't <yet> get those.

I think the only reason Safari exists on Windows is so developers can use it for compatibility testing for the iPhone.

robertsjoe, I will remember your words when I see BBOD on my Mac OS X. I thought it were bad third party drivers or software, but if you say so, let it be bad Mac OS X responsible, I don't mind.

Dipsht, this vuln is moderate not only for Win 7, but for Vista too, which is good news.

Anyway, I won't touch Win 7 until SP1 comes out for it. Got burnt with early install of Vista RTM in 2007, not that stupid anymore. See ya in a couple of years, Windows 7 SP1.

This is neither Windows nor Safari specific. It's a vulnerability with Apple's system software both on OS X and with software they install on Windows for use with Safari.

The vulnerability which allows anyone to remotely read local files on the user's computer applies to:

ALL OS X 10.5 users regardless of which browser they use if they use the default RSS feed reader settings.

The entire installed base of OS X 10.5 is probably a larger number than the tiny percentage of Windows users who choose to use Safari.

Not surprised Giz posting that. They'll be the spear end of the Win7 FUD campaign. Lam and Diaz's unabashed fanboism have made that place a mockery.

I wonder if robertsjoe does not even install Apple's security patches - just like he ignored Apple's short-lived recommendation that their users run an anti-virus for better security - because OS X is claimed to be the epitome of perfection. Why would you need to patch a perfect system, or need to add additional protections to an allegedly invulnerable OS?

I wish Media Center wasn't so buggy in 7. I have sent MS feedback about it. I keep getting copying errors while playing live TV (not recorded) and random error messages.

Installing patches is a sign of lack of faith for the truly devoted.

I'm sure robertsjoe is running 10.5.0, just as the people who wrote Leopard intended with out those revisionist  "service packs" and "patches" that are the mark of the heathen pretending to faith.

In case you haven't realized yet.Your 360 has o have mce running before you can use the Play To from another windows 7 pc.

@mikegalos: Of course I install all updates. As I'm sure you do the enormous amounts of updates (and almost as many security updates) for Windows. Bet you can't wait until Terrifying Tuesday of each month when Microsoft patches the sieve (Windows).

Apple's recommendation was for the OS prior to OS X. I am therefore not ignoring said recommendation (which actually does not exist). OS X users do not need to run anti-virus and anti-spyware software. When will you learn. Unlike Windows users. If you don't, you're toast.

It's only you Microsofties that blame "3rd parties" for the BSOD. When it's the shoddy OS that's the root of the problem.

Numbers have nothing to do with it. It's a device you use to claim some sort of superiority. That's all you have. Look past that and the OS and other software is better from Apple, worse from Microsoft.

Hope you guys have patched Windows 6.1 and not touch any MP3 files. They'll be corrupted.

Nah, they're not. As always, you obviously didn't mind to check the details. MP3s get corrupted, if they

- contain more than 16 KB of Metadata, and

- get those Metadata edited, either manually or automatically by Windows Media Player when automtatic updating over the Internet is selected.

I checked my MP3 collection (some 25.000 files), and though i'm using Album Art a lot, none of those has more than 16 KB of Metadata.

Not that i think that this is of the slightest interest to you, but as an information to those who haven't dived into the problem details yet. No need for heart attacks....

Yes, its good to know that security vulnerabilities will be patched quickly. With Apple, you never know how long it might be.

And you know this how?  Hardware problems are often at the root of a BSOD, and if not that, it IS most likely a driver issue.  If you look at the crash data for Vista, which I know you won't or really don't care, you will see that a very large percentage of those early crashes for Vista were traced to the shoddy drivers that NVidia put out.

Likewise, did you blame Apple for a shoddy OS when the problems started appearing upgrading to Leopard that were mostly traced to a particular third party app?

Obviously correct Dipsh. My buddy with a very high end custom computer was running Vista SP1 fine. Then his mobo died. He claimed that they could not find the exact mobo to replace [ I don't think they really looked too hrd] and gave him a top line ASUS. He was getting BSOD until he updated the video card driver. Now he gets system freezes, so he must work it all out again, but the point is that Vista ran fine before the mobo upgrade. It relly sucks since I am the one that recommended the custom build company.

Of course robertsjoe has turn up the rhetoric and the random illogic that comes up. I have an explanation.

I put Windows 7 on a VM using Parallels 4.0 with the "experiemntal" Windows 7 update....

I ran Vista on the same Mac...with Vista, I gave it 2GB of RAM and it it fly...it was OK....wasn't really a FAN of Vista, but I was just playing with it, not really going to "use" it as my main VM....

The "experimental" Windows 7 update didn't allow me to select how much RAM and HD space to allocate to the Win7 VM...it just defaulted it to 1GB of RAM, and 32GB (I believe) of HD...

The experience was night and day better than Vista....the machine (VM) felt fast and peppy...

Not a fan of Aero Snaps...in fact, I hate it....there are times I just move a window up to the top of the screen, and then the damn thing maximizes when I just wanted to move it out of the way.....I'm sorry but when I want to drag and drop something from one place to another, I don't need to have both windows each take up 50% of the screen to do it...I can easily just grab the corner, resize the window to something reasonable, do it with the other window too, and let the drag-drop operation commence....

All this hubbub about putting running programs and shortcuts on the same bar....way too much is being made of it...it's fine.

All in all, from what I've seen so far in Win7...I likey....I likey alot!
