Google Sync

Oh my.

Microsoft emailed me today to explain that they have licensed intellectual property to Google:

Earlier today Google announced Google Sync, which is made possible by a patent license they obtained from Microsoft covering Google’s implementation of the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol on Google servers.  Of note, Microsoft recently announced an expansion of its Exchange Active Sync Licensing Program, and licensees currently include partners and competitors Apple, Nokia, Palm, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

In addition, Microsoft has released the following statement, from Horacio Gutierrez, Deputy General Counsel and VP, Intellectual Property & Licensing at Microsoft:

"Google's licensing of these Microsoft patents relating to the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol is a clear acknowledgement of the innovation taking place at Microsoft. This agreement is also a great example of Microsoft's openness to generally license our patents under fair and reasonable terms so long as licensees respect Microsoft intellectual property. This open approach has been part of Microsoft's IP licensing policy since 2003 and has resulted in over 500 licensing agreements of the last five years."

Hm. So. What is Google Sync? According to Google...

YES! /happy dance. The roll out of new features at Google is pretty astounding. Just what they are doing in Labs on Gmail blows away what everyone else is doing.

I'm sure glad I got "Google" tattooed on my butt back in the day. It was a toss up between that and Altavista. Whew!

Looks Google sync is for all phone types (not just windows mobile).  Interesting how Google is allowed to develop a competing product along side MS with their blessing.  I guess only apple can getting away with anti competitive practices now a days.

I've been waiting (and waiting and waiting) for calendar sync on my Windows Mobile phone without exchange.... and now Google has it first?  Why is this part of Windows Live services?   What is wrong with this world?

Now this is what I like to see. Even though Google and Microsoft are in competition, where they can work together is the common ground that needs to happen. Microsoft does very well with Exchange and Google willl benefit. Plus Microsoft gets a little of that Google money. All in all, a big win for both sides. Consumers get the quality of Exchange and the flexability of Google. Many uncommon marriages so to speak have happened before.

At least I know that you'll never be able to find that direction on a map.

ActiveSync has always been a nice offering. Sad that up until now, it's fortunes have been tied to Windows Mobile.

So, will GoogleSync also let you syncrhonize, say, Outlook calendar and so on, or Windows Calendar?

I'd like to see an open sync tool that let us syncrhonize, any combination of services and gadgets no matter what they were.

Does anyone know if this replaces/deletes your iPhone calendar? I use my company's Exchange right now, so would it get replaced/deleted by Google calendar and Contacts or would it make a second calendar?

I'm with Subzero on this, marriage and competition is making our lives easier. It wonderful to be wanted....sometimes ;)

Now that they're "Microsoft-compliant", I'm sure that's not true any more...right, "Waethorn"?
