Windows Live Messenger update available

Microsoft sends word that it is updating Windows Live Messenger in the wake of the Wave 3 release:

The latest version of Windows Live Messenger (14.0.8064.0206) is now available for free download here.

Over the next month, if you’re still running versions 8.1 or 8.5, you’ll get a prompt encouraging you to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. If you accept the optional upgrade, the installer will launch and start your free upgrade.

If you already have older versions of any of these programs installed (ex. Windows Live Mail, Photo Gallery, or Toolbar), they’ll be automatically upgraded to their latest versions along with Messenger.

No word yet on whether Microsoft plans to make Messenger work properly (i.e. in the tray) in Windows 7, at least as an option.

Thanks to Sebastian V. for the tip.

Just updated and it seems to function fine on Windows 7. The only problem I have with it is that it insists on always displaying an item in the taskbar. When you click on that item it launches the main contacts view as a separate item in the taskbar which is kind of annoying. I think the problem stems from the fact that I have unpinned everything from my taskbar so that it only shows programs that are currently running.

From the other thread:

>>I've have never met a single Windows Mobile owner who actually likes their phone.<<

I like mine.  Lots of hacks added on from Howards forum to iron out idiosyrocies, but I like it just fine.

Anybody willing to bet that the MS retail stores will be a roaring success?I like Pauls take on it in the short takes:

"Apparently there isn't anything that Microsoft won't copy from a successful competitor...its hired a former Wal-Mart exec to make it happen. (Apparently people who destroy competition get along well with each other. But I kid.)"

He really needs that vacation he's leaving for.  He's pretty cranky:

"Microsoft and Adobe in war of words of Silverlight

--

Because an actual war would require more than 17 people to actually use Silverlight."

Ouch!

"Nintendo sold almost 680,000 Wii consoles in January, compared to just 309,000 for the 360 (and 203,000 for the Sony PS3). And I'd also point out that the top three selling console game titles in January all run on the Wii exclusively. So, what is the basis for Microsoft's self-pronounced success? Hey, some people are actually watching Netflix-based movies with the thing. That's gotta count for something."

Double ouch!!

I'm using Messenger on Windows 7 now and I don't see Paul's issue with it running outside the tray TBH. I kinda like how it's implemented and I'm beginning to take to the new task bar. Things that run in the tray just don't seem right somehow once you're used to the new way of doing things.

@Ocean

Not that your going to give anything resembling an intellegent response, but what does any of those OFF-TOPIC POSTING have to do with:

"Windows Live Messenger update available "

Now give us a real, no arrogant weasel answer, as to why any of that is needed in the comment section of a story again called:

"Windows Live Messenger update available"

And especially since the WindowsITPro site allows comments, making it pretty useless to post about another article over here.

Nobody said they weren't legal here (whatever the hell you mean by that...)

It doesn't mean that it's not annoying as f***.

Stop piggybacking off a successful blog and make your own if you think your topics are worth talking about.
