Big Nintendo Wii update

I realize I'm not exactly the Wii's biggest backer, but this does change things a bit:

Wii System Update

Download Wii Menu 4.0 today, and expand the potential of your Wii console with a comprehensive storage solution.

Store downloaded games and channels with ease. View even more media* on the Photo Channel or Wii Speak Channel. Manage the content on your Wii console more effectively.

What’s new with Wii Menu 4.0?

Store more—Add more Wii storage using SD Cards or the high capacity SDHC Card format (up to 32GB).

Improved SD Card support—launch WiiWare titles, Virtual Console games, or channels directly from an SD/SDHC Card.

Let your Wii console move games and channels to an SD/SDHC Card with Auto Manage when system memory fills up.

Download titles from the Wii Shop Channel to Wii system memory or directly to an SD/SDHC Card.

How do I download it?

Updating your Wii Menu is easy! Just select the System Update option in Wii System Settings.

* Images in JPEG format only. Video in Quicktime or AVI format only. Music in AAC format only

"Music in AAC format only"

Times have changed (and so have Paul and Microsoft) from the days when Paul urged folks away from AAC and toward MP3.

This happens to be the first time I've seen "AAC format only" though. I trust Sony is passing along all that licensing saving to buyers.  (That and a root kit will get you a cup of coffee.)

It is interesting that the Wii Photo Channel initially supported MP3 only and now it only supports AAC.

There are a lot of long-overdue features in this release.

Wow 32gigs of storage.  That will hold 4 maybe 5 ripped .mp4 movies?

Not to mention a 32gig SD card cost the same, or more, as a 500gig notebook drive for my PS3.

Wii = great for Nintendo only kids games in a party setting.  Oh and collecting dust between said parties.

I will give it to Nintendo they are the masters of stirring the hype over the "short supply" of off the shelf parts.

I am sorry but I made the Wii is curently collecting dust, I bought it for my little bro and he never plays it. With xbox being so cheap now I have 4 in my house, my friends also have one, we have played with 13 xbox at the same time in the same house and it rocks. I just don't see why the Wii is selling, I bought a repleacement plan for it so hopefully it breaks and I can get my money back.

Wow you sound like Paul with his numbers.  I wont deny they have sold more hardware.  However "what" is this generation and what is not something easy to nail down.

I dont think the Wii competes against the 360 or PS3, at least not directly.  There are plenty of games that are just not on Wii that are PS3, 360 games and maybe PC.  As a media center/extender the Wii is a loser.  There is overlap but not much.

If you have young kids and want a cheap game console with lots of kids games, little to NO MP gaming features, and dont care as much about HD gaming/media center abilities then the Wii is what you are looking for.

If you have older kids/adults that like Teen-Mature games in HD, strong on the multi-player aspect, with good to very good HD/Media Center features then PS3/360.

If you want a console that will heat up a room, sounds like a leaf blower and will fail 99% of the time....repeatedly, then the 360 is your only option:)

Then there is the specific hardware vs all that is being sold.  For example this link...

www.gamingnexus.com/.../Item11903.aspx

Shows that the PS2 is still selling strong in 2009.  MS is lagging way behind in total hardware sales and Nintendo is way ahead of both.

That's pretty much my family in a nutshell.  And the sales figures would seem to indicate that there are plenty like us.

The Wii is generally good, clean family fun and my kids love it.  As for the Doom/Quake/Halo sorts of games, I don't let my kids play those anyway.  And as to Media Center features, I have other options.

So I basically agree - the Wii competes for a different demographic than the PS3 and 360.

Easy answer:  MS and Sony would kill to have the Wii's sales.  Look at their moves to appeal to the audiience the Wii serves.

Winner?  Wii!

Sorry I dont see MS and Sony doing very much at all to enter the single player, E game market.

There have been plenty of rumors about MS and Sony making a we-mote clone for a few years now, but none have come to be.

So there we have it.  Lindy doesn't know the market at all.

Ocean,

I have to disagree with you because of the software attach rate. Microsoft hands down has beaten the Wii in software sales.

360 Attach Rate: 8.1%

Wii Attach Rate: 5.5%

Microsoft is selling an addtional 2.6% additional copies of games versus the Wii. In terms of third party games, Microsoft outsold the Wii to the tune of $300 Million. Wii has the hardware sales, I'll give you that.  If the Console doesn't sell the games as highly, which make you more money in the long term, then the Wii isn't as profitable as the 360.

The Xbox Marketplace is beating the other guys online services. Sony may have more members, but Microsoft is definitely making the cash off of them.

So while Wii is still a popular fad, I'd have to say with the hardcore gamers and the most popular third party titles, Xbox 360 wins by a mile.

Wii games are now available at drugstores at $19.99. Have they sold? No. People ignore it. Not interested in Wii software. I think that says a lot about the Wii.

Poor nintendo. Since they have made a profit on each of the 45million units sold MS wish they had their problem. How many billions has the XBox cost MS over the years. The RRoD alone cost them more than a billion.

After more than 2 years does it still count as a fad?

If you are over 13 you'll get a 'proper' console but if you have kids you'll get a Wii as well.

As for the article : this is one of those press release postings that Paul does too often Opening sentence - Press release - Closing Sentence.

With the quicktime and AAC usage I wonder if they are thinking of linking up with Apple? Sony and MS are already in the set top internet TV space but Nintendo... Plus the white Wii design certainly took its cues from Apple. With Apple's comparative lack of interest in their own TV box why not?

I've heard this argument time and again.

1) "Hardcore Gamers" are not nearly as important as they think they are.

2) Simply, 50 million sales on ANY console is nothing to sneeze at. Eventually game designers will be forced to follow the money whether they like it or not.

As far as a fad? sign me up for revenue checks if 50 million is fad. :)

I've just noticed the banner ad in the NY Times. You have 2 choices a) Mint, Book of Matches, Macbook Pro or b) Lenovo Y730, Zune 8GB and 365 Lattes.

It took me a second to realise it is not an Apple campaign but Microsoft and that you are supposed to choose b. If they had put a digital camera in the b option I might have had second thoughts but a Zune? 365 Lattes? Healthy.

Apple will see an increase in sales from this campaign.
