Windows 7 Release Candidate availability

I wasn't aware that Microsoft had released this info to the public, but they have. :) So now I can talk about it…

The Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) will be made available to MSDN and Technet subscribers on April 30, 2009.

The public release of the Windows 7 RC will begin May 5, as previously reported.

Beta testers? I'm sure they'll get it eventually. Microsoft seems to have forgotten that they exist.

BTW … One thing we still can't discuss is the Windows Server 2008 R2 RC release. Expect news there in the days ahead as well.

And I'll be asking about the availability plans for XP Mode. I've heard that a beta will happen this coming week, but I'm not sure yet if that's public or for a smaller group. Hopefully this release is newer than the one we've been using since March.

Benchmarks comparing performance of &, Vista and XP would be great to see. I guess that legitimately can't occur until 7 goes GM?

That is fine with me. I was hoping for this Friday (past) but it looks like a few days yet: Thursday (this).

so the public RC will be on  Tuesday in 2 weeks?... Here we go again. I hope they have enough bandwidth up this time.

I wonder why it takes a full week between the time that the RC leaks unoffcially and it becomes available on MSDN/Technet? I'd have to assume that they want to make sure they have all their ducks in a row before their download servers and product key generators get slammed again.

I wonder how the builds leak in the first place. Is someone at Microsoft putting it on torrent sites?

I would guess, from my hours in offices in another era that you are correct. It takes a while for everyone to give their input, get the OKs, etc. etc and when they are planning for what might be the biggest download [or one of the biggest downloads] in Internet history, it might take a week to make sure the ducks really are in a row.

That's a good question Hamilton. What is the deal with the  Pirate bay? Didn't the owners get convicted in Sweden? Why is the site still operating?

Does anybody else get the feeling that Microsoft's graphic/UI designers are hitting this UI hard with HDR?  The colours are extremely vivid, but also well balanced.

@Paul: I'm surprise you were this late (well, kind of late) in posting the RC release date :-) It was been on the Web for about 2 days before I saw you post it.

Anyway, I'm loving the latest posts on the SuperSite. I just finished reading the Areo Theme review. It's was great! I'm hoping sites like GettyImages and Airliners.net will sell Aero Themes. That would be cool.

Good stuff dude!

@Waethorn: Yep. I'm liking the Aero (Glass) color schemes in Windows 7.

I'm not sure about the color violet (I just not a fan of purple), but in the Scenes Areo Theme the "Viololet" glass color looks nice with the backgrounds.

Has anyone noticed that "stack by" is missing from folder sort options in explorer in 7100? I hope I'm missing something.

Never mind me. Apparently it has been changed to "Arrange by" and didn't realize it in the beta.

It's not so much the Aero colour schemes that I was talking about.  The themes all have photos that look like HDR conversions.  The Aero glass colours are just well-matched to the photos too, so it makes everything "pop" more on the screen.

BTW:  The Canada theme is really nice.

@Waethorn: I see :-) My bad. I'm not familiar with that type of photography but now that you mention it, I think some of the Vista photogs used that type of photo in his Vista backgrounds. I can't remember his name though.

RE: Localized themes - I really like the Japan one: "Blossoms & Mt Fuji." It has a pinkish Glass color but still is nice.

(Hmm... I wonder if MS has a localized themes from Central America?)

@techfan:

Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 supports HDR and RAW processing (certain RAW formats only - there are more than 200 available formats for RAW).  It does a very good job too.  For a program that's under $100, it's well worth it.  Of course, it could double as a cheap Photoshop alternative.  It's a very capable replacement.

http://www.paintshoppro.com

There's also a really nice program called Photomatix that is designed specifically for HDR photo production.  If you happen to have a digital point-and-shoot with multi-bracketing (Casio cameras usually do) you can make some amazing pics with Photomatix.  It also does RAW processing and can give you options to give you a similar output as merging multiple exposures.

http://www.hdrsoft.com

The gallery on the Photomatix site has some shots that look nearly identical to the type that are in Windows 7.

http://www.hdrsoft.com/gallery/gallery.php?id=5&gid=0

I'd like to see this kind of image processing in HD consumer camcorders.  Imagine the video quality you could get with your home movies....
