Joe Wilcox is leaving eWeek's Microsoft Watch

It looks like Joe Wilcox is leaving eWeek:

Today is my last day as an eWEEK editor. In a few hours I will join the swelling ranks of journalists smitten by the economic crisis and by changes the Internet is forcing on my profession.

My ending comes on a day of new beginning for Microsoft. Windows 7 promises to be a big release for Microsoft. Today's Windows 7 Release Candidate is start of something really new.

I've been reporting about Microsoft since 1997 and specifically blogging about the company since May 2003. I took over Microsoft Watch in November 2006. It has been a joy to write this blog.

If you would like to contact me personally I am joewilcox on Twitter and joewilcox at gmail.com, live.com or mac.com.

With that, there is nothing left to say but goodbye—and thank you.

Thank you Joe. You're a class act. I look forward to seeing and working with you again in the future.

Speaking of class acts, those who have been around awhile will remember that Mary Jo Foley started Microsoft Watch back in 2001. She left in 2006, Microsoft Watch was pulled into eWeek, and Mary Jo started blogging at ZDNet.

Dam Paul is pulling posts, but sadly Waethorn on the other Winjihadist's can say whatever they want.

Wilcox never pulled that kind of lame *** move.

Paul, maybe you could just reset Ocean's password so he can't log back in.

That'd be lame, he'd just change his nick to Sea or something. You can't make him go away until you close registration of new users here.

No spamming.

I'm just asking why there is a double standard.

So, Ocean has been banned for one week for spamming the blog.

There's no double standard. In the context of a Windows site, Microsot's earnings are news, so that's covered formally on the new site. Simple and obvious.

So Apple's earnings are not news then? Just trying to understand the logic behind this.

animositysomina,

Apple's earnings are news. They're not interesting to the Windows IT Pro audience, however. Microsoft's earnings are. For whatever it's worth, as it's a minor news story, I did cover Apple's earnings in WinInfo Short Takes that Friday:

windowsitpro.com/.../wininfo-short-takes-week-of-april-27.html

Here's what I wrote:

Apple Weathers Recession Just Fine, Too

Speaking of quarterly results that defy logic, high-priced gadget maker Apple also reported incredibly strong earnings, with a profit of $1.21 billion on revenues of $8.16 billion, the company's best non-holiday quarter ever. Sure, Mac sales were down, but just by 3 percent. (Mac revenues were down 16 percent, which is a bit more troubling, I guess.) The rest of Apple's businesses are going gangbusters: iPhone sales rocketed to 3.79 million units from just 1.7 million in the same quarter a year ago. And even iPod sales were up slightly, to 11.01 million units, despite the introduction of the unbelievably lackluster new iPod shuffle. Folks, this is a company that can do no wrong.

Ocean (and apparently you) are making something out of nothing.

End of discussion.

Wow, I thought that I was having a bad week. This recession sucks. I guess this is news, but I just hate hearing about this stuff [bad news]. I guess that I need to 'grow a pair'. Best of luck to Joe.

This one....not so much.

I never liked Microsoft Watch after Mary Jo left it was (and still is) very biased against Microsoft. Plenty of people these days call it "Microsoft Bash" instead !

that's bad form, thurrott.  at least you did get the message that it's smelly for you to blog about apple's earnings and skipping over Microsoft's to talk about Websphere.  really, who cares about that?  stay relevant and shoot straight.  don't be another mossberg [with substantially smaller reach, of course].

Good luck to Joe Wilcox.

I found "Microsoft Watch" after MJF left and the very few times I went to that site/blog, it always seemed to be as kind of against MS. There was just something there that I did not like when I want to read news about MS/Windows.

I don't know how "Microsoft Watch" was when MJF ran it, but if it's anything like the "All About Microsoft" blog, I would have very much enjoyed it.

That's the difference between being a quasi-watchdog site and a fanboi rag. As the Stewart/Cramer debate showed us, there's a huge distinction..

This might be a good time for Ocean to start his own blog. Not that I'm comparing Wilcox to Ocean, but considering that the supermarket tabloid style tech blogs like Gizmodo and Engadget seem to be thriving, I'm sure ocean and robertsjoe have good jobs waiting for them.

I'm sure Wilcox (one of the best in the business, IMHO) will be glad to hear that. "Ocean" will miss the point completely and just be happy to be mentioned in the same sentence. Robertsjoe will post something about Teversham's move to Apple and ask why Paul isn't covering it. "Waethorn" will chime in with "APPLE IS THE SUXXOR W00T!".
