Are there some good benchmarks showing Vista SP2 vs Windows 7 RC?  I mean with over 1GIG of updates since it came out it should be very near Windows 7.

Does SP2 include the new firewall that 7 has?  That new firewall is very nice for creating exceptions.

I just did method 2 and got flagged for SP2.

The real question is why anybody supposedly tech-savvy enough to post on a Windows comment board would not have installed SP1 after 14 Months of general availability, admit it and expect even the slightest credibility ever again!

You can just download windows vista with service pack 3 iso or make your own. You can also make it install ie 8, silver light, avg antivirus, put the disk or usb dirve boot forget about it. We IT admins don't like doing windows updates manually.

From reading Lindy's posts, I don't think she is very tech savvy.

Well I dont run Vista except in a VM to test it.  I have SP1 installed on that VM.  No I would not install a SP manually in a corporate enviroment unless I was building a template for VMware and even then I would probably just use whatever patching system is in place, WSUS, SCCM, Shavlik, Alieta etc.

Your missing my point, if someone was to rebuild a computer they cant install just SP2, they need SP1, unless they have media that has been slipstreamed with SP2 by MS that is.

To my knowledge this is the first SP for a MS OS that is not cumulative.  Why the change?  Is it because 2008 shipped with SP1 included as its base code and so they dont want to make Vista SP2 that will patch a non-SP'ed Vista?

You're wrong.  XP SP3 is the same.  R2 upgrades of Windows Server 2003 also required SP1 also.

My main point is that anyone can download a sp2 vista iso inboth 32bit or 64bit and burn it and use it. It should work with any retail key (im not sure about oem).

R2 is not a service pack for 2003, its a second CD with some Windows Server specific tools that should have been free and some of those tools need SP1 fixes to work.  SP2 would upgrade a 2003 box from SP0 or SP1.  2003 R2 came as SP1.

I just upgraded to SP2. Took about 12 or so minutes to download and install. Works perfect!

Yeah this site is a joke.  I don't really read anything negative in Lindy's first comment, just some questions.

Yet Mike goes negative right away, like a defensive old woman and hamilton sputters some dribble out of left field that is nothing but a juvenile insult.

At least Dark Sages is polite and constructive.  This site needs better comment software.  I would love nothing more to block Mike's comments.

I agree its odd that this SP is not cumulative, which is usually the case with most Microsoft SP's.  I say most to excuse me from having to scour the internet for mundane details showing that 2.3% of the time MS SP's are not cumulative and therefore allowing Wae/Mike some Winsupersite glory on this joke of a blog.

XP SP3 on Automatic Updates and the Windows Update page still installs SP2 FIRST before SP3.

It was also available as an upgrade, or do you forget that Windows Server 2003 shipped without R2 originally?  R2 requires SP1.

Good question for some reason they took off the link for download iso sp1 from the windowsvista.com and they have not added sp2. I hope they do it that was the point of vista to be able to download it and try it before buying.

For now I guess technet or msdn is the only option or a torrent

You are funny Wae, I dont care how Windows update installs SP3 on XP.  That Microsoft website says that you can install it on XP with no SP's.  You said it needed SP1.

No I did not forget.  Windows 2003 (non-R2) shipped on a single CD.  After SP1 came out, Windows 2003 R2 came out and it shipped on 2-CD's.  The second CD were the R2 tools.  Since it came out after SP1, SP1 was slipped streamed into 2003 R2

Paul's sites used to contain constructive conversation, where even a seasoned IT Pro could come and learn from the community. Lately, and with Paul's thumbs up, this site has turned into a haven for the juvenile and simple minded OS wars. If we wanted that there are thousands of other sites that we could get our fill. Looks like it will be Keith Combs' Blahg or AeroXperience for the real Windows related information from here on out...I'll keep coming here for a small bit of entertainment.

Wait, you guys are actually girls?! If that's true, I hope that I minded my manners. I waited to DL until it was on Win update.

OT. The kids are searching with Google and DL'ed a Trojan on my filly updated XP SP3 box. The funny thing was that free Avast found it in the temp folder and deleted it before it caused any harm. Pretty dang cool! I ran it and found nothing else. We're on auto pilot now and I'm happy, since I can't stop the kids from accidentally surfing in the wrong places. [I have OneCare on my two Vista boxes and was saving the last license in case I was buying another laptop].

Has anyone tried it yet? Any performance or security enhancements? Maybe I'll try it tonight.

You might try using Open Dns on your router it might help some with the bad sites. I ended up using Steady State on my daughters machine, it works great just reboot the machine and all changes to the system are removed.

Had to make her use a different account for term papers though, Steady State removes Docs as well.

@tayme, Paul invites this K-rap, by dropping snide comments about Apple.  I think he does it to drive hits, flame-bait if you will.  There are many other Windows and Apple sites that are much more informative with out the "mean girls" attitude, even when talking about the competition.  By even bringing up Apple in the snide way he does it shows that it bothers him.  Then again maybe its the many predictions he has made (and was totally wrong) in that past about Apple going under that just gets under his skin.

Maybe he should sell the domain name to a more journalistic professional, pro Windows focused site?

It was only wrong to mikegalos, because he seems to thinks that if somebody asks a simple question about Microsoft, then they are blaspheming and if anybody dares to not immediately upgrade when it does not make sense for them or their company then they are wronging Microsoft in some way. Its actually fun to watch mikegalos be foolish!

You should be able to allow access to a USB drive so that she could store documents there.

If you are comfortable with the Windows Automated Installation Kit and capturing the installed image and performing a "Generalize" on it, SP2 can be slipstreamed into an ISO with Vista-with-SP1.

Thanks Whip, I will check it out. I was very impressed that it was promptly detected and removed from XP. This shows that these more modern protective apps work, and decreases my fear. Vista and Win 7 are even more secure, so my point is that we have less to fear these days. Believe me, some of the ads from HP and other security app companies are a zillion times worse than any Apple ad. I've psoted about them in the past, especially one particular HP security app/feature ad that was used many times on the radio about how fast malware will take down your entire company, in their attempt to sell it to you.

tayme, I would argue that Paul's site hasn't had truly constructive comments for years.  As a survivor of the bonch era, it's actually better here now.  rj isn't nearly as bad as bonch.

I seem to remember a long time ago, after SP1 was released, that it was mentioned that SP1 would be the baseline required going forward.  I think I heard it here, on the SuperSite for Windows (TM).

Installed it, it went fine I don't notice much of anything maybe slightly faster.

Fear sells! I trade off between Avast and Avira for my free AV's I use NOD32 and the new Norton AV on machines I have chosen to get paid protection. Last time we got a serious infection on my kids machine she allowed it to install, it was called PC-Antispyware and it was tough to get rid of. I later found Malwarebytes (also free) which works very well and supposedly gets rid of the fake anti-virus apps. My brother who was still using Adaware paid version got infected, Adaware support remotely logged on to his PC and used Malwarebytes to clean it.

Definitely will check out Malwarebytes.
