What exactly was the "Snow Leopard Debacle"?

I'm curious.  I haven't heard of any debacles, and I read plenty of MS and Apple blogs.

Wow! Impressive design, especially when compared to the sucky Zune HD. Not one letter has been cut off. What does Microsoft have against the "e"?

Wow Paul, you are such a wealth of knowledge, showing pictures from case makers??  How did you get such information?  Oh wait these kind of photos have been around for at least 60 days from a dozen sources.  

Glad you caught up....oh wait I get it, this is the Winsupersite, before an Apple product launch FUD attempt.  Just like a few days before SL launched we got the Paul T FUD machine in high gear.

@chipwinter, the rumors, just like the many, many case rumors are that he iTouch will be cheaper than the Zune HD across the board.

The Nano 5G looks like the now discontinued Zune 4/8/16 - only the Zune's looked a lot better than this.

The UI on the Zune is better/cleaner and the touchpad is significantly better than the click wheel, which and with the Nano's UI look really dated. Badly dated - even Soviet era remote control dated.

Never really was able to see it so clearly, but the Nano looks bad and while I am at it, the grid square design of the iPod Touch interface - being square and not round like human fingers are, is looking pretty dated, too. Seems oddly confining and rigid as compared to the Zune HD's very fluid and design, which has depth.

Lol. iPod nano 5G is the exact same. So is the touch.

Gotta love how Apple brainwashes their consumers to buy the same thing every year.

Since these may not be official pictures, your comments about the touch and nano 5G being exactly the same may be incorrect..then again, they may be.  We'll know soon.

The best part about your comment is that you assume just because a new product is released, "their consumers" run out to replace what they have.  Do you do that when MS releases a new OS?  Just upgrade for no reason other than a new OS came out?  Do you throw out your computer and buy a new one when a new processor gets released?!

You make no sense...your hatred for everything that isn't MS is like an illness!

But do you know what I love more than your assumption that people buy the same thing every year?  I love how MS keeps trying their hand in consumer electronics, fails to the tune of billions of dollars, and people like you come on here and deride a company that is successful at something MS can't get right.

I have to say... Apple's looking mighty dated and long in the tooth with their designs... it's like too much of any "one" food - you may love it, but you get tired of eating it day in, day out, night in, night out...

I think the huge Snow Leopard debacle was when some sites reported that the Snow Leopard install DVD has an old version of Adobe Flash player. Which, at the time the OS went GM, had been old for 8 days.

A non-debacle if I've ever seen one.

The touch homescreen appears to be that of a 1G touch. It's clearly NOT running OS 3.0, so it's a safe bet that picture was at least partially, if not entirely photoshopped. Either way there's about 100 things wrong with it. The nano I have no idea.

What did they reveal? These look exactly the same as the iPhone/iPod Touch has since June 2007.

And Paul, are you aware that your sign-up has been broken for at least a year? I finally figured out how to get on here by signing up at Windows IT Pro's website. But the form provided by your link creates accounts that can never be activated.

So a few cases and photoshopped images have be leaked. So what? It wasn't Paul or ZDnet that leaked these images. You can thank Cygnett for the leak. Its funny how folks getting mad because of speculation and letting the cat out of the bag early. Isn't this what the press does? Don't they get early copies of speeches and the scoop?

It just seems like people rail against Paul or anyone in the Windows/Microsoft world just to sound like angry self righteous person.

What did you expect? If he's really that bad, there are plenty of other technology websites on the web. Just move along. No need to sound like you're going to have an aneurysm because some guy on a Windows site leaks information about an Apple product.

What does it matter? People will still drool over the new iPods. People will still buy it. Paul will go on doing his thing.

For the geniuses posting here, these are "Case Photos" and not device photos.  I know its really hard to see that, NOT.  Case Photos as in cheap third party silicone cases.  In both photos its clear as day.  The only thing this reveals is the camera on the iTouch.  The Nano in these photos could easily be the same as the current photos.

Paul you amaze me with your Apple coverage.  You are like a 13 year old with this kind of drivel.  You are like some jilted lover that tries to stick it to Apple every chance you get.  Stick to what you know best, coming out with books that contain 90% of the last book.  Is Windows 7 Secrets the biggest ever book to cover a service pack?

They need to kill the shuffle too.  What a stinker that one was.  Did anybody actually buy one last year?  I know that local big box stores near me don't usually have them in stock because they say that they had numerous returns on them, and people usually switch to a non-Apple MP3 player with a colour screen for no more than the same money (sometimes less) and with the same storage space, but with controls that actually make sense to anybody that isn't Steve Jobs.

This isn't news. Ruined? I think not.

The first picture is an iPhone with the iPod Touch screen overlaid. You can tell it's an iPhone because it looks substantially thicker, has a chunky chrome bezel and has a vibrate switch on the side. Why on earth would an iPod Touch have a vibrate switch?

The second picture just looks like a normal iPod Nano, in a case.

I also disagree with your snow leopard assessment, Snow Leopard is a big deal from an architecture standpoint, Apple has updated the innards to position

OSX for the future, but yeah I think too many Mac fans over hyped it and feel let down.

The real benefits of Snow leopard will become more apparent with time and all the complainers will settle down.

As an aside, many of these same changes have already been implemented in Vista and further refined in Windows 7

As for the Zune HD, its a very sweet device from my initial impressions , the Zune is packing an awful lot of power for something that's "just" an MP3 media player.

If the rumors I've heard are true, this thing is gonna rock...and sign me up for Zune and its services.

Thurrot thinks anything associated with Apple is a "debacle"... why not? He gets those little perk checks signed by Steve Ballmer of Microsoft, so you can't bite the hand that feeds you.

Oh, and to the people saying MS may have a chance, Apple is supposed to announce a 64GB iPod Touch at $379, according to some sources (not yet confirmed, of course), and will being in their 32GB 3rd Gen iPod Touch at the same price as Zune HD.

There has been a speaker on the iPod Touch since the 2nd Gen. It's only mono, but a speaker.

@meason: This is the strenght of MS ... BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY...

So, Hurray for Apple... it reinvent the world... by using an 40 years old unsecure OS kernel as a base for their GUI shell... Hurray...

Apple has run out of steam on the iPod line. It's simply reduced to replicating the iPhone without the 3G radio. The classic looks staid. The nano has a microscopic click wheel that is impossible to use accurately. The non-Touch interface is dated and lacks features. The shuffle is a piece of crap that nobody knows how to use - it represents simplicity taken to it's extreme illogical conclusion.

Basically, Apple has let the iPods wither and die. But they still cash in with minor updates and persistent demand year-in year-out due to pure brand name recognition and mindshare. As Mike Galos said a while back, Apple dropped the ball on innovation when it started using the new colours of the nano as a major feature in advertising.

I predict....

A color it yourself nano....... it will be primer white/grey and a new line of iPaints will be released to allow you to paint your new nano with 60 dollar bottle of plastic model paint.

If I may, the interface is truly innovative - as I said earlier, the twist interface, though great on its own, now has this feature/task focus ability that provides large round targets for touch. It's pretty amazing and as a UI is very different and extremely fast.

The other area where the HD is truly innovative that comes to immediate mind is what is possible from day one - unfortunately, I can't say any more about that here. I can say that doing really amazing things on the "platform" is going to be very easy and profitable for those that work it.

Forget experience integration buzz and think about content fusion and universal access to a very broad universe of content - some from new sources, but as importantly, much from existing ones and then seamlessly mixing and accessing all of it from an equally diverse mix of platforms.

Bolt all that to greatly extended social activities already well ahead of the competition and you can see a lot of innovation without even having to begin to talk about what the hardware's potential is.

Finally, the deal is great - an all you can eat buffet of "stuff" for three different people, using three different devices on three different computers for one price - it's a great value and saves a lot of money.

The Zune HD, its client software, Marketplace, and Social make the entire Zune experience very complete and unique at the same time. Extend that to the Xbox as they have and the PC, as they have and the Zune adds a lot more value outside the device itself.

WRONG!!! The only reason OSX has stability it is because it only run in a highly controlled hardware environmental... In comparition, Windows is 99% stable when running on any hardware that exist in the world...

It really easy to pretend OSX is table when it don't run on 95% of the existing hardware....

While I appreciate your response, I have to disagree that the "twist" or whatever you are calling it is innovative.  It's like they took the iPod Touch transitions, and made them a bit more fancy.  It does look nice, but hardly innovative.

Also, I hate to say it, but when you pick "Music" and it zooms in...it's cool and all, but seeing at the top of the screen the bottom of the letters, it looks retarded.  They should have just cut out the whole word.

Sorry, but failing to see this "innovation" in the UI.

As far as some of the other features....Zune Social?  Synching?

Come on.

I kind of feel if someone is going to be calling out Apple for lack of innovation, there would actually BE innovation in the product they are hoping is going to claim the throne.

Things that baffle me about some people on here:

1) Why come to a "SuperSite for Windows" if you are an apple fan? Surely your time would be spent on sites that focus on what it is you are actually interested in.

Games it what its about.  How long has it been rumored that there would be a handheld xbox, since the day the 360 came out.  Good luck with that.  So now you have the DS, PSP, iTouch/iPhone and Zune HD.  EA will just port another version of Tiger Woods 10.  Yawn.

Can the Zune HD do this?  More importantly would the now ABANDONED zunes support this if the Zune could do this?

Yes I know that the heart of OSX dates all the way back to the mid seventies, I'm under no illusion.

But the upgrades to Snow leopard are worth the cost and do lay the ground work for more interesting things to come.

Despite all the bickering, I think we can all agree that iPods are old and boring. They all do the exact same thing.

Luckily for Apple, they will sell well from the dead brained Apple masses. (A few that are so bored with Apple that they sit at a Windows website all day)

I see that Apple has finally added FM to the iPod. And it seems to have a Live Pause feature, like Tivo, I guess.

Anyone know if the Zune has something like that?
