Ocean, the basis for Paul's remarks regarding iTunes 9 is found in his use of and reporting on Microsoft's Zune 3.1 software (existing in more or less its present form for more than two years now).

It is clearly evident that the excellent Zune 3.1 software influenced iTunes 9. In some cases, iTunes 9 directly grafted Zune features and attempted to integrate them to iTunes 9. Paul echoes an opinion that Apple did so less well than they could have, and less well than Microsoft did originally.

Paul's observations include these observations and sum up with the recommendation that Apple re-write an entirely new iTunes application.

While Zune software will get another update tomorrow - to version 4. It will likely still not please everyone. Regardless, I'd encourage you to give it a try - it really is an excellent application and in many ways, it is much better than iTunes.

Paul has had some great suggestions about what MS might do with Zune software in coming months/years and I suspect that many of them will find their way into the app and its derivatives.

Now, when will Facebook work? I've had this problem since the launch of web activities...

Ocean just doesn't like the truth - because even though he uses Windows, he admits to using iTunes on it.  What can I say - he's a masochist.

The Canadian Zune site is also down, but it runs off the zune.net domain.  Hopefully there's some news about the Zune Video service on there tomorrow.

Thanks for looking out for us poor helpless souls from the wrath of Paul Thurott, but I'm pretty sure we're all going to manage just find and recover from the big bad words.  If we can't, we'll just leave the site, never to return...something that some people here find incapable of doing. HA.

Exactly.  I can never understand why people continue to read what Paul has to say yet b*tch about him in EVERY post.  I've stopped reading plenty of blogs over the years if I felt I no longer like the writer(s).

The Mac commercials insulted people?!  I have seen them all and I never thought of them as being insulting.....maybe a bit off base...maybe silly...some just plain stupid.....but insulting to the people watching them?!  no way.

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it insulting.

My goodness...I use itunes, but I'm also not an 8 year old girl that would get offended by something that Paul says on a WINDOWS fansite about APPLE users.  Man, people here are absolutely unbelievable sometimes.

The Mac commercials insult everyone's intelligence, no matter whether you use a Mac or a PC. If you actually think they are truthful or funny, you are brain dead or just an idiot.

I find them so distasteful that I will never purchase any Apple product just as I have not spent any money on Sony products since the root kit debacle.

Amazing how Paul can give a good, honest, review of the iPod models, including negative opinions and leave out such idiotic remarks.

Keep it up Paul....your honest opinion about the PRODUCTS you review is wanted.  Your dishonest, obnoxious comments about the people that use some of those products is not required.

One thing that does puzzle me about public forums is that it does seem that people who "use" Microsoft software - including those like my own company, that build solutions based on its clients, servers and tools, tend to visit and support sites like this one - to learn and perhaps share solutions and what their experience reveals.

For example, while I have been to Mac/Apple product centric sites, it has been as a result of a search for a solution to a challenge in using an Apple product as experienced by a customer, or friend. I have never commented on such a site - let alone in a way that would possibly be considered confrontational or insulting.

What puzzles me is the number of people who appear to be strong Apple/Mac supporters that take, or even have the time to spend so much energy on Windows/MS centric sites in what appear be efforts to defend their preferences in con/pro-sumer technologies.

I've seen a lot of this sort of thing from what appear to be *nix/Linuces supporters commenting on MS community sites we host and support for our larger community of users and pros.

It just seems a little odd to me and it continues to puzzle me. I mean, clearly, Apple's software and products are used by more Windows users than Maxc/OS X users and the articles are relevant to Windows users. However, it seems strange for Mac supporters that claim to never use Microsoft software to have such a keen interest in what a bunch of MS/Windows centric pros and users have to say about anything - including the technologies we use. It's a little creepy, even... like being followed about by people who simply don't like you for reasons that make no good sense. So Paul has an opinion. Ok. We all do. So what?

These are fans of technology -- the same as there are fans of sports teams.  They MAKE the time to do so.  Plus, it's no fun arguing into an echo chamber.  Here there are technology enthusiasts of every stripe.  The discussions are so much better for it.

The new Xbox 360's that they sell in the Elite Halo 3 + wireless bundles for $329 are quiet and cool too, and I could certainly see using it as a Media Center Extender NOW, but I don't like the NXE UI.  I prefer Sony's simpler navigation.  I find the Xbox navigation confusing because there is too much overlap between sections.  It's not easy to get lost in the PS3 navigation, but that's not true of the Xbox NXE.  Someone I know bought an Xbox to play sports games on because some of the series from EA will not be shipping on PC (he's a hardcore PC gamer), and his brother-in-law has one and he wants to play against him.  Will have to see if it scratches discs though.

The PS3 has Home though (Home Theatre is awesome!), and the Slim is a really nice piece of kit.  For less than $100, you could ~triple the hard drive size and buy a USB enclosure to put the old drive in, and it doesn't void the warranty either.  Good stuff.  Both are good for creating media storage solutions.  They're not really servers, because they won't stream to other devices - yet (except the PSP in the case of the PS3) - but does anybody know of a way to do this without hacking their box?

In any case, both are decent options, at least now with the Xbox 360 noise issues fixed (will see if my buddy's will RRoD) and the PS3 price drop.  Consumers = WIN!

I want to Microsoft make a handheld gaming system that connects to the Xbox at least as seamlessly as the PSP to the PS3 (it's not entirely seamless to setup, but it works well once it's done).  The Zune HD doesn't do that, and I think they missed that boat.  The Tegra would've been an awesome option to link to the 360.  The PS3 Slim and PSPgo look awesome.

Ok Ocean, I do not disgree, but if as you say, it is like sports teams and their fans, then should be not then extend the same consideration to Paul on his own site?

Not as funny as you think.  I was a longtime Shuffle and then iPod user.  Now I'm a future iPhone user...soon as they move away from AT&T exclusivity.  If that doesn't happen, then it will be a Touch.

That said, I love my iTunes smart playlists and the way I have I collection starred and tagged.  I don't have any problems with it and I might keep using it regardless of my future device choices.

LOL!  Canada's networks are going to be moving to GSM (HSPA) for the 2010 Olympics (Telus is rolling out HSPA before the end of this month).  Unless US networks do the same it'll be AT&T all the way, and I don't see a CDMA (EVDO [Rev. A]) iPhone on the books anytime soon.  CDMA is dead.  Where have you been?

Keep dreaming on that iPhone being on more than just AT&T in the US anytime soon.  If you do see it, it's going to be T-Mobile, since no where in the world have they created a CDMA iPhone.

Not necessarily blog readers, I was speaking more generally.  And I really didn't mean insulting, since I'm not really insulted by it.  However, SJ has said that Windows users have no taste.  The Mac commercials talk down to you.  The iPhone commercials work very well, though, since they are touting the benefits, mainly of the app store, and not trying to bash the competition.
