I think MSE is great, it seems to work as well (along w/ Windows firewall) as any paid antivirus solution I've used.

MSE on Windows 7's firewall and Action Center, and you pretty much have all of OneCare without the nagging. Great stuff on its own, but if it keeps getting certifications and has great detection/protection rates, then all the better!

It has become the new standard for free AV's that I install at home or on friends machines who don't want to pay for their protection. It may not be as good as NOD32 but I think for most intelligent users its excellent.

I am using MSE on all my machines and it's doing its job quietly in the background.  

1.5 mil in first week. 1.1 mil the second week. How is that 'going up'? Do you mean total number of downloads? Unless they invent a negative download, yes the numbers will always go up, it's what totals do.

And I don't live at some 3rd world country, at least I don't think so.. I'm right here in the heart of Europe. So WTF?

I've now loaded this on three PCs, and I was happy to admit I was wrong...this is a much better solution than AVG. Paul's recommendation was (and is) spot-on.

MSE is better at active detection rates actually, which is where it counts.  You want to catch a virus with the active scanner before it gets saved to a drive.

They released it to several countries.  These are the officially supported countries and locales in alphabetical order:

Australia

Austria

Belgium - Dutch

Belgium - French

Brazil

Canada - English

Canada - French

France

Germany

Great Britian

Ireland

Italy

Japan

Mexico

Netherlands

New Zealand

Singapore

Spain

Switzerland - French

Switzerland - German

United States

If you're in one of those countries and can't download, your ISP may be using an IP address that Microsoft doesn't recognize.  Contact Microsoft or your ISP to get that resolved.  If you're using any out-of-country proxy service or IP anonymizer, that can also cause issues.

Short of those issues to check, you can get the beta from the Microsoft Connect site, or [unofficially] download it from Softpedia (be careful not to click on ads on that site).  

FYI: the beta will always upgrade to the final release.

I have MSE loaded on all my machines, and also ones recently that I have worked on (friends and family) and it works great! I had AVG Free on my wife's for a long time, and every 3 or 4 months her computer would just get wacky, and I would do a format and reinstall of Windows - I had to do this about 3 weeks ago, and I put MSE on instead of AVG Free. Immediately, MSE started to notify her about the websites she was visiting (a lot of clipart, gif's, etc. for her blogs and websites) - they had spyware or viruses. AVG had never stopped it. I don't see another reinstall very soon in her future with MSE on the machine.

Wae - thanks for a recommndation about Softpedia and beta. As for the list of countries, I'm from Croatia, so my country isn't listed. Which is really weird as we're neighbours with Italy and Austria which are on the list. But seeing as others larger countries like Portugal, Hungary, Poland and others aren't listed either, I can't but keep wondering... what does Microsoft think, and when will they give everyone access to software.

Since availability is so limited, I'm not surprised by "only" 2 million downloads. Shouldn't this software be aimed at "poorer" countries, like India, China, Russia etc? That's third of the market excluded right there in just 3 countries.

Anyway, I'm off to Softpedia to see if I can find the download :)

Weird enough... I mean, weird enough to post it here :)

I went to softpedia and downloaded installer, started and was rejected because "you're running 64 bit OS" yadda yadda... And click here to learn more.

I click it (actual link is go.microsoft.com/fwlink ), and I'm presented with support page: www.microsoft.com/.../support.aspx

And i HUGE DOWNLOAD button on top. Well enough, offers 64bit Win7 version right away.

So I go to www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials which expelled me just a few minutes ago because I'm not from the right countries, and I've got a same huge DOWNLOAD button. There's even "Locales and languages " link which offers XP/Vista/Win7 and 32/64 bit choices, together with all the locales as Wae mentioned.

So I'm WTF again.. and than I noticed on top right of page "United States - Change" link :D Sure enough, link from application itself links (and sets up) a US locale of web page, so now I've got access to everything.

I think I'll circulate the links I've mentioned above a bit, just to see if everyone in Croatia can download it without problems. Oh, what can I say... I love Microsoft when I can "profit" of their mistakes :)

There are 6 links on Softpedia.  1 for each installer - XP (32-bit only), Vista/7 32-bit, and Vista/7 64-bit.  Then there are 2 links for each of those - 1 for the US mirror, 1 for the Romanian mirror.  You have to click on the right installer for your OS though.

The first link that you specified in your comment set your market for English US.  That must've been a mistake in the installer to specify the US code string.

I guess they don't do IP filtering after all.  Some do - like Hulu, Pandora, Last.fm, etc.

Sometimes websites just check your locale settings in Windows, and if you change the Regional Settings in the Control Panel, you can trick websites into giving you out-of-country info.  Anyway, cheers!

MSE will also prevent Wimad, which is a common MP3 ID3-tag trojan script which infects most of the music floating on Limewire's network.  That's not to say it will pick up everything, nor does it make downloading pirated music any less illegal, but I know that AVG and a lot of other commercial software won't even detect Wimad.
