I'll gratefully pay taxes to Microsoft than be ripped off my Apple. $1699 for a Core i7 with a 27" screen? That's an absolute joke. And I really though my jokes were bad. Windows users have had 30" monitors for years now. Still playing catch up Apple.

I expected better from you, "subzero". You're always partisan, but usually you're at least accurate. Apple's had a 30" monitor since its introduction in June 2004.

Ten seconds of research, WinJihadist.

Its possible but it really depends on what your doing with it. I put mine together for around 1500 a few months ago so knocking 500 off should be doable.

The 920's are still around and perform amazing mines Oclocked to 3.1GHZ and it runs totally stable with stock cooling. The Core i5's are a great deal if you don't do a lot of video rendering or other tasks that take advantage of hyperthreading and the mobo's are cheaper.

The 920s are 279 on Newegg I got mine at Microcenter for 189 on sale so if you can wait they do go down periodically.

The MSI 1366 Pro board is pretty good can be found for 189 if you look around.

Video cards: Nvidia is way behind the latest ATI 5870 and should have a dramatic price cuts soon, buy that last.

Seagate's 7200.12 series are fast and cheap 500 gigs will run around 59 bucks.

A cheap Cooler Master Case from Microcenter under their PowerSpec brand can be found as low as 39 if you wait its a great case and I prefer to some of the more expensive ones I've tried.

DDR3 ram has come way down a 6GB kit is what you want for now Newegg has 6 Gigs of OCZ for 80 bucks after the rebate, similiar deals can be had from Crucial and others.

have fun

If you're serious, I built my boss a Core i7 machine for $1k.  It's not that hard on Newegg.

de Silentio,

I'm serious about it.

I only ask because

1)  The last i looked it wasn't easily doable, but that was much earlier (this year?  I don't remember when)

2)  I'm a bit lazy and I know a bunch of you guys on this board are knowledgable about this stuff.

Thanks, but that link says that the mobo doesn't have integrated video (which i don't want anyway) and that i would need to buy a separate vid card...

knowing me, im going to be bumping up that system to close to over 1500...

I guess what i want for 1K isnt' really availabel yet..

sorry for typis..one hand is in a brace....yuck

LGA 1366 mobo's don't have integrated video, a ATI 4850 can be had for 119.00 a 4870 for 150.

The 4850 is fine for anything short of the most demanding games. If you shop around and buy carefully it can be done.

MicroCenter has the i7 920 with hyperthreading for 199 again, 189 if you sign up for their email alerts (once a week). The 850 is a great part having 8cores though somewhat future proofs you.

If you don't have a store near you, you may be out of luck though. I don't think the offer is good online.

redunion1940 said:

i7 920 and i7 860 are pretty much the same, except the 860 is faster has 4 actual cores and 4 virtual cores like the 920 and runs on the mainstream 1156 MOBO, instead of the soon to be retired 920's MOBOS

October 22, 2009 5:41 PM

whiplash55 said:

LGA 1366 boards aren't going anywhere, some benchmarking finds the 920 still faster others find the 860 running faster. the 1156 boards are cheaper though so on a budget machine may be a better choice.

Overclocking either is so easy it takes about 5 minutes and with a water cooled CPU cooler getting 3.6 or more isn't unheard of. It just sends your power usage threw  the roof. Either processor is great.

Careful with the student $29 offer.  The files did not work and customer support at digital river was unapologetic and unhelpful.  Ended up having to buy the family pack at office max and wasted my $29 on a worthless file.

See it isn't so hard to find a 1 K system, though I would advise getting the 64 bit edition of Windows 7, and the 5770 is way more powerful than a Geforce 9400

5770= 4870 in perfromance but has lower power draw and DX11 support.
