I used two different XP Home installation CD's and never was asked for the key, or even to validate. I started from the CD's and erased the HD in all. Is something installed into the mobo or it's BIOS?

@daveinla: Aferguson and Xtreem are both right with their comments. I can't remember the last Windows machine I have purchased which doesn't come with a refresh DVD complete with applications/drivers etc for that machine. And it is definitely possibly to install Windows over another version and keep the files at the same time.

I'm about to uninstall RC1 of SP1 and install RTM *gulp*. Wish me luck!!!

@daveinla, This appears to have kept very quiet but Vista works exactly as you would like it to. If you opt not to do an upgrade but an new install, WIndows makes a new folder called Windows.old and puts in the old Windows, Program Files and Users folders.

You get all the benefits of a new installation but you still have access to all the old files.

One of the nice things about iTunes on the PC is that it's configuration files are all held in xml files on your PC.

If you need to completely rebuild your PC again, try this. Obviously you need to back up your PC before your rebuild it.

1 - Install iTunes and Quicktime on the new PC, run them but don't search for media and don't do any configuration changes except for items that are necessary to get iTunes to start. Close iTunes.

2 - Restore all your Movies, TV Shows and Music to identical Folders as on your last PC.

3 - Replace all the files in %USERPROFILE%/My Documents/My Music/iTunes folder with your backed up files.

iTunes will now be the same as when you last used it.

I know for a fact that this setup of which you speak of is available in vista pc's from manufacturers. Now mined you vista itself will not do this (unless you do an upgrade which is practicly identical to what you just talked about) from vista to vista. So in other words you can do it.

Why can't the installer leave your Users folder, Program files and Docs and Settings and put just a brand new Win folder ?? It works this way on OS X so even if you're unlucky enough to have to reinstall OS X to clean a severe glitch, 30 minutes after restore of your system from the DVD, you're up and running with the same computer that you had before, but with a spankin' new System folder... That sound simple though, but maybe it's due to that antiquated pain in the bu** System registry.
