I think you are adding to your reader's confusion as-well as fostering the notion that Apple's share of the computer pie is much larger than reality!

First of all that headline! "Less than 8.3 percent" just does not have the same punch as something like "Gartner and IDC fraudulently inflate the Mac market share"

Dam right those figures are "untrue". If they think that adding the word "preliminary" means that they are not actually lying through their teeth..... well it just beggars belief.

On Thursday Microsoft will be reporting figures of over 60 million Vista systems sold in q3. With over 75% of those (take away the number you first thought of) in the US that makes the Mac share about 2.356711%

First, that Gateway is now number 5 when it was number 3 and then bought by Acer, and also that Dell replaces HP at the top of the US market.

I'm guessing that at this rate (if you are a uniformitarianist, which I'm not but we'll say I am for this argument) that Apple will be where Microsoft is in about 100 years. They are growing but there are a number of reasons for that. 1) Windows works on the mac now, so people may buy it for that Windows. In some jobs you need to have both OSes for development testing, so that's one less PC being sold for someone who can use both. 2) Since the move to Intel, people have to throw out there old ones and buy new ones... pretty soon that won't be an issue as no one will have their PowerPC's anymore.

There is no reason to be an ass about this issue. I truly believe that Paul's has one of the better Matrix's used for best guessing market share.

I know you love to be contrarian when it comes the mac, but seriously... you aren't helping your image with this post. I just don't see the point. Apple is growing at a rate many multiples higher than the broader PC industry. They have a market cap that now exceeds HP (and for the moment IBM as well) and more than doubles Dell.

There's simply ZERO negative here. Apple has no control over IDC and Gartner. As is often the case, you're conflating the statements and hype of third parties with that of Apple itself. Between this and all the digs against Leopard, I get the feeling you might be enjoying a little Mac-user baiting.

Apple's press release shows 965 000 units for Americas, but it also lists 473 000 units for Retail, which if I'm not mistaken is almost entirely in the US. I think you need to add the two (and as you said subtract for all the other 'Americas').
