For overclocking, it's warranted. Don't be surprised when higher-end processors in a series run over 60 degrees C. I had a Pentium D 840 that ran at 75C at idle, and 85C under load.

That's *CELCIUS*! That would equate to about 167-185F!!

(Yes really!)

You have to remember that that was the core temp inside the chip. The heatsink was hot, but not hot enough that you couldn't keep your hand on it. It never had issues though, and a buddy of mine built an identical computer and it was the same. I've built several systems over the years, and today's Core 2 Extremes are no exception. Intel's processors can take the heat. The motherboard and such can't though. Proper case cooling is always required for those high-end processors, in order to dissipate the heat away from the other components.

Intel doesn't package just any heatsink with their processors - each one is tuned for the model, performance, and energy envelope of the particular CPU it's bundled with. Usually higher-end systems have heatsinks with an all-copper core. Lower end ones usually are all aluminum to save on cost.

The latest Penryn processors must be MUCH more energy efficient though, because the heatsink thickness (the height) is less than half of that of the heatsinks for older model CPU's.

It's funny that you mention building your own PC, because my first and second XP PC's that I built made me so proud of myself, that it was almost like graduating med school again. I gave the first to my older brother, who uses it as his main PC, and the second is my XGBox Ninja rig that works so well that I don't really need to replace it. I overclocked the 3.4 GHz Prescott CPU, but had to get better fan than stock Intel as it ran very hot right out of the box without overclocking. Neon fans and an LCD temp gauge came next. It was so fun, and I did it all in between sets while lifting weights. That first XP boot was pure happiness. Still, I had to try VIsta, so it's on my Mac Pro Tower. I may be a jock, but the geek wanna-be his a little insatiable at times. Heck, I just tried out a new overclocking utility for the Pro Tower, which has a 3GHz Quad Xeon [2 dual cores that is], just because, I had to try it out. Also, for the past few years, I now have X-10 and Smart Home switches and outlets all over the house. You should try it.

Regards,

Doc

However, I had many good times with XP. From building custom systems to keeping in contact with my college buddies all across the nation, I have a lot of fond memories with XP. Watching some of the most hilarious online videos, playing the PC games of that era, and some good times. But at 7 years old, XP has deserves its place in the OS retirement home. Although users will push it to its 2014 permanent retirement date and beyond, I believe the purpose of Windows is to look foward.

As a gadget and technology enthusiast, it is kind of a sad day to see XP start to fade into PC History.

Doc... you are definitely no troll. Your arguments are always interesting and engaging to read. I'd encourage you to blog more, because you blog with reasonable experience and competence.

I say it's better to get hardware that's certified for the software, thereby allowing you to jump in as soon as possible. Of course, in the IT world, it's required that you test products, systems, platforms, and software in an isolated IT lab environment before deploying to your production systems.

That link should be all of the Certified for Windows Vista hardware on the Windows Marketplace site, making it easy to purchase online and compare prices.

Heck, OS X had no drivers for my business class Microtek scanner for almost a year, or at least it seems that way. That's why it's better for the average Joe to wait before diving in to the newest technology. However, I do remember XP SP2 update having zero problems with all 4 of my PC's. It didn't seem like a bomb to me. I will miss XP because it has been a useful, profitable tool for my business for years. My kids use XP in school and have made PowerPoint presentations IN FIRST GRADE! They are 7, 7 and 8 years old and use XP daily. However, they do like my Vista desktop background.
