I thought that the Apple TV was too limited, so I bought a DIVX certified DVD player for $60 and just rip the DVD's then convert them and put them on a USB drive. The Philips DVP5982 has a USB 2 port [HDMI and upconverts as well] and will read from FAT32 formatted USB drives, as well as USB flash drives. I was really thinking about the Zune for trips when we need a portable media player, due to the fire sale of the first gen Zune's. But then I figured that I may as well just get a portable DVD player that is DIVX certified, especially since we already have a few MP3 players, and have much DIVX movies. This new rental service still doesn't change my mind. Making DIVX from my own hard copy doesn't take much effort. I certainly don't set there and watch it rip and convert.

Indeed the AppleTV has a nice UI and should be a more attractive device if movie rental is available at reasonable price from the interface. BTW, I use Frontrow 2.0 on my Macmini w/ Leopard plugged as a mediacenter in the living room, and it's just as gorgeous as AppleTV's interface. + it's more upgradeable and powerful !

That was remarkably unbiased, Paul! I am impressed!

I won't have to worry about different prices, because they will all be the same.

I won't have to even think about different file formats, sizes and other compatibility issues.

I won't have to make hardware/software decisions.

I don't have to deal with 5 different companies to make it all work.

The difference with Apple's approach (just like the iPod, iPhone, iTunes, and Macs) is that it will "JUST WORK". No thinking about it, making decisions, or compatability issues... It will work from the moment I plug it in.

What an amazing idea!
