I snagged netshare while it was still on the app store. Works pretty great, though the setup is a little finicky.

Isn't this getting a little meta? I was the first to go after Mike for his instant attack on the platform. This is a post by Paul, an iPhone user and serious critic of Windows Mobile as a "horrible" platform. I think the conversation has largely been in bounds.

Mike is entitled to his blind hate of Apple and steadfast allegiance to his former (and maybe current) benefactor, Microsoft. If he's going to attack the iPhone in this thread as a platform with an "unusable" interface that's only good for people "meeting friends after a day at the mall"... he's inviting a response by anyone with a rational mind and real world experience with the iPhone in the field.

Remember, Mike has hit Apple posts with everything from "Apple is a monopoly", which was just summarily dismissed by the court in California, to "Apple doesn't do any innovation at all". These positions aren't rational or defensible and it's totally fine to call them out.

The fact that others just bash everything Microsoft does is not justification for Mike's bizarre rants. Most of us here are fairly rational and can see where both companies succeed and fail.

Exchange is a great product. Apple's use of it is just more proof that the company is not nearly as ideological as the Mikes of the world like to claim. Zune is a very good product. Xbox is great experience (with criminally terrible reliability). Silverlight appears to be pretty awesome (netflix streaming is amazing).

Window Mobile, however, is absolute garbage and that is clearly the majority consensus. It's just plain awful. It's got a UI that's bloated with chrome left over from a failed effort to cram the desktop experience into a tiny screen (part of the Windows Everywhere strategy). It's buggy and slow and continues to have sync and integration issues with Microsoft's other services (from what I understand).

Apple has done more in its 16 months of iPhone availability to innovate in the mobile OS space than everything Microsoft has done put together. That's hyperbole, but I believe it's also true. Apple's aggressive pricing of the iPhone, in line with their iPod strategy, should be the final nail in the coffin for the argument that they "gouge" on prices... as if that ever made any sense. You can only gouge on price when you have a captive audience. The electric company can gouge. Microsoft, arguably, has the power to gouge. Apple can't gouge. Not even with iTunes. If Apple's price is above what the market will bare, they lose sales. That they've been gaining sales is proof that their pricing is in the sweet spot.

Microsoft Exchange on the backend with the iPhone as a client is a great team. Apple just gets the direct consumer experience better than many of Microsoft's platform teams seem to.

And if you think I was defending mike there, go back and read my posts. I said it doesn't matter what mike thinks about the iPhone as long as the millions of people who bought it like it. I said the people have spoken and made it the #1 handset in the country. Of course you ignored it, because it doesn't fit your description of me as a Microsoft fanatic.

Do you know why comments were civilized on the 'Simple Basic' thread? Because there was no lindy with his usual incoherent remarks about mike and other posters. There was no mike to use mike's statements as a segue for an all-out attack on Microsoft. And there was no bettie to call people who disagreed with him names.

No. He hasn't. And you're using that as a platform to attack everything about MS. I mean, papola is as big a fanatic as he claims mike is. You guys whine about Paul and Mike attacking Apple and go back and do the exact same thing.

Here's a question for you, why don't you contribute something meaningful instead of your usual gibberish about MS and some of the posters here? What have you contributed to this thread? Nothing.

Thanks John. The only reason that I would consider to pwn is Netshare, although I would at most use it two weeks each year, and probably not even that much, since I can usually find WiFi while on vacation at the Jersey shore.

When I said that Exchange was a great product, exactly how does that jive with "That probably explains your all-out attacks against everything Microsoft." You see most of us call like it is, when Apple is wrong they are wrong, when MS is wrong they are wrong. Conversely both do great things.

Why dont you contribute something to this thread beside defending Mike? Are you his son or something?

I haven't hacked mine. I see no benefit in it, especially now that there are thousands of legit apps available. Feel free to make fun, but I use mobileme for my personal productivity and have largely found it to work great. It is like exchange for home. And the iphone does such a great job of mixing my work exchange calendars and contacts with the mobileme ones.

The pace of software improvement on this platform is simply awesome, though. Just think about how far the iPhone has come after just 16 months on the market. It's insane. And the fact that non-GAAP income shows that the iPhone nearly DOUBLED Apple's revenue last quarter... it's a epic product. Truly epic.

Now, as the economy goes into bizarre territory of protracted depression, Apple's cash horde will be the key to it's viability and continued development. THAT is the reason why profitability has always been more important than mindless pursuit of marketshare. That's why it's not just boosterism for those of us that enjoy Apple's products have been comfortable with their pricing strategy.

Has anyone here considered that in attempting to prove that mike's a MS fanatic, you yourself end up looking like a Mac Jihadist? I mean, you can leave it at what you think Mike has got wrong. No, instead you want to take that extra step and attempt to pi** all over Microsoft and/or other posters on this thread, in lindy's case. I think you guys believe that mike doesn't speak as an individual but for the company itself and so every statement by mike is construed to be an attack by Microsoft on poor Apple. That probably explains your all-out attacks against everything Microsoft.

Think about it. This is like Sean Hannity calling Keith Olbermann biased.

John, google Calendar [GooCal] syncs with Outlook [Mike gave me the link for the app] and SaiSuke is a $10 app that gives a good Monthly view and has two way sync with GooCal. Saisuke Free is the same app but it only syncs the current week [although you can keep changing the iPhone date and sync two each week of your choice] and is a good demo. I like the monthly view more than list view. Did you pwn your phone and did it update to 2.2?

@mikegalos - Yes, I am familiar with the Podcaster episode. Stupid move on Apple's part. But, I still have not seen Apple's new OTA Podcast download service advertised as "Why we killed Podcaster despite it meeting every published requirement for being on our platform". Are you saying that because mikegalos says so, then it is true?

As far as usability goes, like I said...I have never used one. But it sounds like those that have disagree with you. But again, mikegalos says so...so it is a fact.

That glance-able summary view is nice. You won't get an argument from me on that. I would love to see apple turn their glance-able screen into a similar layout when you briefly hit the power (before sliding to unlock the interface).

However, this home button mini-feature that you're maniacally stuck on has nothing to do with that. This is about zipping to the first page of apps. Period. It's yet another effort to reduce steps in the UI and it's a good one. I personally don't need or want a "glance-able" page once I've unlocked the phone for use. I want one-press access to the apps/features I intend to use. After all, if I've swiped it open, I want to use it, not just glance at it.

The idea of using "start" drop-down menus on a 3 inch screen is part of the problem. Microsoft clearly didn't even consider using non-windows UI conventions. That Apple started from scratch and built a new paradigm for a new platform shows why they are doing so well. This market favors form-factor and integration over "choice". This is Apple's game to lose, now.

This is just an asinine statement of bias and weirdness. It's typical blind apple-basher ad hominem attacks. You might as well say "iPhone users are f@gs". Seriously. This is barely above "crapple sux". Barely.

I'm an exec and I rely on my iPhone for all the exchange functionality. It's quickly taking over Viacom's top brass (of which I am certainly not). I especially love the list view on my calendar. I also rely on it's excellent document preview interface and, like most users, love it's amazing desktop-grade browsing experience. Especially during my 1 hour+ (one way) commute each day.

I happen to see many MANY business people in downtown Manhattan and on the subways and buses working off of iPhones. I also see them watching movies and listening to music. It turns out, business users are also humans and like a great media experience too.

I honestly can't say that I've really longed for cut-and-paste much, but that's going to be a per-use issue. I do understand why they're taking their time to get the UI convention right with it, though.

Mike, it's abundantly clear that overall, the iPhone's UI paradigm is easier to use than WinMo. That there may be the random feature difference that people prefer in WinMo is without question. But your hackery is in taking one or two features and damning the whole system. It's also clear to everyone that you're a biased Microsoft apologist, blind Apple basher and a great abuser of facts.

No matter. The iPhone is already well on it's way to marginalizing all WinMo devices combined into the "Other" sliver of the pie chart. Android will drain every nickel out of the licensing game for the mobile market that isn't an iPhone or a Blackberry.

I wonder if Ballmer still "like's his strategy". Monopoly leveraging isn't going to work this time.

There are plenty of choices, actually hundreds with many more coming, and here are a few hundred, but not complete as they are updates and don't post the initial rollout:

Engadget is edgy to say the least as there are many apps at the app store that duplicate Apple's iPhone software, including several calendars, calculators. Apple only denied a few [around 4 or 5 to my knowledge] which have made the headlines. While I disagree with you on your assertion that there many choices with apps for the iPhone, I think that Apple should relax the very stringent policies. Five denials do not make a major Hypocrisy, but the policy itself is tight. Either way, if you don't like the rules, then develop for someone else.

Again, if you are a doctor that treats many patients or admits many to the hospital, WinMo has some great tools/apps and the upcoming digital hospitals and offices will make it very useful. of course, iPhone apps may also become available too.
