Why does Network discovery take so long in Vista?

This is pretty much my only complaint with Vista. Don't understand why it takes so long to bring up a local network. Even as a member of my domain it takes 5+ minutes or longer to display my network. All the XP machines have the LLTD (Link Layer Topology Discovery) added. Yet it takes way too long. NO change in this behavior with SP1 RC or the newer SP1 Refresh.

I experience that as well. Very strange.

I only have a theory when it comes to this wierd delay in discovering local networks. Remember that Vista is built from the ground up with security in mind. Perhaps Microsoft has new security layers in the code that tries to secure the PC before it connects to a network. In many ways to protect ourselves from fools and crackers who would exploit the connection, Vista probably tries to determine risk and strength of the network before it gives you the data. Hopefully, SP 1 or future service packs will fix that and speed up the process.

I dont recall seeing anything on SP1 for that fix. I know what you mean by slow. It is not increadibly slow for me mined u but it can take a while. I think it goase through some verifications before allowing you to access the other computers. Same with downloading files it takes alot longer to verify then did with xp.

Seems to have been fixed with Vista SP1. I had not used it until this afternoon and my network popped right up. Just like in XP...
