  • Taming Microsoft Word 2007’s File Associations and Document Windows, Part Two

Rafael continues his exploration of what I consider to be a very real and silly Word bug, this time providing instructions for how to fix the problem : Due to the way Word was designed, there doesn’t appear to be an easy solution to preserve the use of the DDE command and keep window z-order intact...

  • Taming Microsoft Word 2007’s File Associations and Document Windows, Part One

The other day, I sort of randomly posted about a number of the stupid little Windows Vista issues that bother me on a regular basis. It wasn't really that random. I had just recently had dinner with a couple of friends, also Windows enthusiasts, about some of this stuff and it was obviously in the...

  • There's a Velociraptor in my PC

A Western Digital VelociRaptor , that is. My desktop PC is almost two years old now. (I purchased it back in October 2006.) It's an HP Pavilion m7690y tower machine with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo E6600 processor, so it's getting a bit long in the tooth, though it's been very reliable overall....

  • Wakoopa adds downloads and screenshots:

I use Wakoopa to track the software I use so I can see what I use most often. (I recommend it for this purpose as well.) The Wakoopa blog reports this week that they've added some interesting new features to the service . The regular surfers on Wakoopa may have already noticed it, but we’re...

  • Heading home…

We’re flying back to Boston today from Ireland, so it’s time to sign off. See you on the other side (of the ocean, that is). --Paul

  • Trip tech triage: Ireland

Since I had previously blogged about my travel technology for our home swap this month in Ireland, I thought I'd also share a few related thoughts now that we're leaving. Every time I travel, I try to optimize what I bring across the board. And is so often the case, technologically and otherwise...

  • Ireland

So we're going on vacation today, to Ireland. We've been there before, once with the kids, but mostly on the western side of the island. This time we'll be staying in a home near Dublin, so we'll spend most of our time there, plus three days up in Northern Ireland. We've got friends...

  • Everything Must Go

Today, I'm reviving an old tradition from my previous blog, the Internet Nexus : Everything Must Go, in which I'm selling old electronics (games, peripherals, DVDs) and giving away books. It's been a while since the last one, so there's a lot of stuff. I'll be posting it in installments...

  • I bought a new MacBook ... to run Windows. Why?

Through a long and circuitous route, I ended up at the Apple Store in Braintree, Massachusetts yesterday, and bought a MacBook . The where, what, and why of this transaction may be of interest. (Or it may not. I will at least point out that among my blogging pet peeves are the incessant morons out there...

  • In the can

At approximately 12:49 pm this afternoon, about 12 hours later than anticipated, I finally finished the initial writing phase of Windows Vista Secrets 2nd Edition and FTP'd the final chapter to the publisher, while uploading a backup copy to Skydrive. I'm not sure what the writing experience...
